Mains block placement?

I just peeked at his site.
Call to order and
“ These are made to order so please allow up to 10 working days despatch time depending on the workload.”
That would be the one for me if I didn’t make my own. :+1:

I have to agree, it’s so annoying when people push their own choices. Confirmation bias I suppose.

What an odd thing to say. Of course it’s biased. Or would it make more sense to you for people to push something that they didn’t like?

The one I bought many years ago now (I mean decades) was from RS. Can’t remember what sockets they were but definitely not MK or Crabtree. IIRC I tried replacing them with Crabtree but it didn’t work as the Crabtrees were very sightly bigger so by the time it got to the end of the block the screw holes in the sockets were out of alignment with the holes in the base!

Remember the Forum Musicworks block bonanza and the Peek rush a few years ago?

Really, is this thread much different? People push what they have and like.

We’re all guilty to greater or lesser degree.

Just checked on his website. All his mains blocks are unavailable - can’t be added to the basket.

In which case I would swallow your pride and give Olson a ring. Or if you really can’t, then order a Russ Andrews 6 way PowerBar. Be sure to specify no Superclamp/filtering in the options when ordering.

Hi
All his blocks are made to order by calling your requirements
He must have bundled a few together for the site pictures.

Hi @Skeptikal , yes but if you try adding to the basket it just says it’s unavailable and won’t add it, ie. it can’t be ordered / made. It’s been like this for as long as I can remember. Seems he’s left them on his site but doesn’t actually sell them anymore.

Have you tried giving him a call? It seems the logical thing to do. Small businesses are often too busy to keep their websites bang up to date.

I haven’t because I don’t want one. Info for the OP only. Worth a call though I agree.

I’m on the case!

Ah I see
I just thought if a special request it wouldn’t have a fixed price for basket.
He has a good reputation. :+1:

211 posts so far and still no consensus on the original question - where to place your mains block. Surely there can only be a limited choice of positions that are physically possible and aesthetically acceptable? Try them out and decide on the optimal location for you and your system. Only you can decide which is the solution that works best for you.

Well! How interesting?

I created a playlist (below) to test the difference between power blocks and have made the first swap. I started by listening to the current Tacima and thought “ that sounds lovely, how is it going to sound better?”. I swapped in the MCRU and bye ‘eck I could actually hear a difference. I guess most will say that is because I ditched the Tacima which may well be true, but I have @Skeptikal ’s Mark Grant choice coming and a Russ Andrews block on the way that I found on t’interweb. I may even make my own and compare. They’re all on approval so nothing lost so far.

Hi
I know I’m trying to help but making your own is best and knowing someone competent and understanding to do it isn’t easy.
If not sure don’t do it.
I don’t like doing a step by step because there is certain dexterity and experience required I wouldn’t suggest unless absolutely confident.
I had some good exchanges with @70sPete about my block having a spare socket and am going to build next week a triple single outlet.
Very similar to the Grant one.
If you must buy one off the shelf then that is the only one I’d now consider.
Sound quality is one thing and safety is more important.

As @Skeptikal says, at this level at least, home made is the very best option. But only if you know what you’re doing. Otherwise please don’t try this at home children!

Ah, you’ve got the Blue Peter badge. This qualifies you to construct a nuclear reactor out of milk bottle tops, washing up liquid bottles and sticky back plastic!

Already done all that and I’ve got a Tracy Island.
I’m waiting for my parts to arrive to construct my 3 way block.
Pictures to follow. :+1:

The best mains block placement can be determined by where the rest of the corresponding hifi is sited.
For example your listening hot seat to speakers.
Using my Compass app I can determine my listening hot seat axis is “130”se.
(Meaning I am listening to the forwards motion of sound equidistant at 130 degrees south East)

I then studied that the Moon motions were benign in this scenario - in that the moons course was always on my right side - yet hopefully far from any gravitational magnetic influences - yet I finished considered putting the mains block on the right side just incase.
