Mains block placement?

It all goes out the window for the rest of the world (outside the UK regs) as no plugtop fuse.
Hence the last line comment in my last post

I’m happy to live with these proper regs and ensure what I do meets me and my families home safety and doesn’t invalidate my home insurance

It’s OlsOn rather than OlsEn just in case someone wants to search for them

I purchased an Olson Part No. 10LH/N which is a 10 way unit and requested they remove the neon light

It’s an extremely well made block and hand assembled in the UK…the wiring inside is first rate

Olson blocks are priced very fairly without the ‘audiophile’ mark up

Whoops spillchucker will edit. :scream:

My day job is a “brain doctor” so I really ought to be okay with wiring this up. :joy: Perhaps I will have a go.

Probably in my head but it sounds different after firing it back up. And not in a good way!

I’m in Yorkshire and so liked the idea of ordering locally. Looked at Mark Grant and MCRU, both local. Went for the latter as I was originally a West Riding lad! (Probably not the most audiophile of reasons). It’s still not arrived but will see if it is better. I won’t be going crazy money wise. It’s just not in my DNA.

Both Mark and MCRU provide pretty good products… personally I’d lean towards Mark only because I’ve purchased so many cables from him over the years and been extremely happy with all of them

Graham’s hifi will also make blocks (and also hydra)

Mark might have something if I knew you and stayed local I’d buy all the bits and you make one up.
You only need 4 sockets so shortest cable to main socket and specify no internal electronics or lights and should be fine.
I am qualified and am amazed at what dangerous rubbish gets recommended because people believe salesmen other than those that do it for a living. :zipper_mouth_face:

Someone correct me if I’m mistaken but I believe that everything electrical sold in the UK, and that includes mains cable assemblies of all descriptions, is required by law to meet extremely strict criteria. Those that do not are illegal. Therefore for my own part I’m perfectly happy to accept that any cables sold by the likes of Naim or The Chord Co. are 100% safe regardless of any other considerations. Quite simply, if they were not then they couldn’t be sold or else certain people from certain companies would by now be guests of His Majesty.

If only it was so simple.
That’s not even counting fake imported products with all the stickers on.

:+1: Where in the world are you @Skeptikal ? Don’t worry I won’t stalk you!

Scotland :scotland:

Even more frugal than me and my compatriots then?

Frugal but not when it comes to safety over snake oil.

Yes obviously - they are illegal and one has to be vigilant. But I’m talking about mains cables from legtimate companies such as Naim. Are we really suggesting that Naim are selling illegal products that fail to meet the required legal standards? If we go down that road then it seems logical to take the view that all of their equipment is highly questionable in terms of safety. If they are flogging unsafe mains cables then why would one assume that anything else they sell is safe? That doesn’t make sense to me. Indeed I would regard all products from such a company as highly suspect and avoid them. The whole scenario seems so unlikely that it’s not even worth thinking about.

Nice! Spent some time up by the Gare Loch many years ago.

I don’t make the regulations.
But I’ve seen many stupid recommendations.
My opinion is I work on the safest of margins and educated myself to a level I can make my own decision’s.
Everyone has their own limits that’s why such inconsistencies exists.
I’m qualified and keep up on regs so if it’s not right as far as I’m concerned I’m certainly not going to recommend to others.
It’s like for example it is safe it’s just been PAT tested I’ve seen plugs inside like steel wool and as long as there isn’t a fault showing at that time it passes.
Only compliant at time of test.
A part can break on your car on the way home from MOT but it can still fail and be dangerous
Was ok at time of testing.
I won’t even have a mains plug in the house with rivet connected plates inside.
Thats me.
But if asked that is my level.
Find out before it’s too late.

I would be interested to hear which MCRU mains block you went for, and what you think of it when it arrives.

I have just gone for one of these, a MCRU No 75 mains block, probably for use on some active speakers.

It does have some mild (unobtrusive according to MCRU) noise filtering, not sure I would use it on Naim kit.

I use a MusicWorks Reflex Ultra Gen 3 (with a sparkly bottom) mains block for my Naim kit, and a Wireworld Matrix 2 for my network devices (switch power supply, router, server etc), and wanted something reasonably priced and well made for some active speakers. So I have taken a horses for courses approach for mains blocks.

It’s a lovely place with lovely friendly people. :+1:

Hwhuff! Not sure I could justify one of them. More than my xs3 cost.

I went for one of these to compare against the Tacima but may not be the right thing perhaps I’ll sell on and go for an Olson or Wireworld matrix2 all similar prices.
