Mains block placement?

No exaggeration there then!! I don’t understand why the OP doesn’t just get a Hydra; it’s neat and discreet, there’s no plugging order angst, it preserves Naim’s star wiring and I bet it sounds better than any of these modestly priced blocks.

There is an another thread about dream or obsession, it’s this sort of thread that shows obsession and general weirdness to great effect.

Not quite sure what you mean HH. I agree Hydras can be excellent - I used one for around 17 years when we had our Naim system. Only trouble is they negate the Powerline Lite plugs which seems a shame to me. As for obsession and general weirdness, well yes, hi-fi is like that isn’t it? I mean most of us are guilty to some extent. I think you have a Powerline don’t you? What’s that all about then, I mean a £600+ mains cable - are you bonkers mate?! I must be too - we’ve got 3 of them. Yes we’re all mad here.

As has been said by others it’s because you asked for star earthing.
Just ask for what you want no neon no problem.

@70sPete just replied above with what you need.
The neon and cable length is easy they make them. :+1:

I did look at this option but there is a chance I may get more boxes (yes I know!) and a block with 2 spare outlets gives me that flexibility. Although I will admit I am now starting to think about sending them all back and sticking with my £42 Tacima. I thought it sounded pretty good!

@MarkL3w
Get the Olson and get rid of all the others including the Tacima.
Any conditioners or neons are a no no especially with Naim equipment.
I’ve been through all of this to great extent and simplest is best.

There’s only one place for your Tacima and that’s in the garbage! Believe me if you think it sounds pretty good you’ll be blown away with the Olson. Incidentally they do options with different numbers of sockets from 4 up to 8 or more in that model. Their website is fairly inpenetrable and not easy to locate what you actually want. I would place the order by ‘phone if in doubt, just quote the model number and say you don’t want the neon and you want a shorter cable. If you want a different number of sockets they will tell you the price and arrange it for you no worries.

I totally agree about the website!

The Olson seems to have got the most votes so I will order one. Listen to all three and then get rid of the losing two. I then need to get back to deciding where to put it!!

Get rid of the others.
Lie it along the back of the rack so you still have access sliding it out.
I’d rather have a safe installation than a great sounding one and sleep at night.
Neons and filtration bad. :+1:

Just get whatever cable its supplied with (1.5mm/2) and replace it yourself with 2.5mm/2.
And even better a cable of your choice e.g. Supra LoRad or whatever …

Okay so the saga continues!

Just had this email from Olson after I asked them to remove the neon.

“Hello Mark,

Thank you for your order.
Unfortunately, our web sales are for standard products only, so we cannot offer any modifications. The unit comes as the standard version.

Would you like us to proceed with processing the order as standard?

Kind Regards
Kriselda Tsatso”

I know others seem to have had an excellent experience, but I can’t say they have been very obliging for me.

Think I am about to throw my toys out of the pram as far as they are concerned I am afraid.

@MarkL3w
I’ve just been to the main website and they do custom builds.
Perhaps a different department internally.

When I ordered I just spaced it online. You have various options so I just tried to spec up a 4 way PDU, no neon, no inlet cable etc, with no issues ?

What can I say - they clearly don’t need my business. I seem to have done the same as everyone else but the same chap kept emailing me. It is interesting that @ninanina did not get what she ordered either. As I recall she asked for the neon to be removed (as I did) and it came fitted and she removed it herself.

Yes I pointed that out to them and filled in the form. They have been spectacularly unhelpful. If I was doing something wrong then get back to me with a solution instead of just “computer says no”.

Anyway, I have moved on.

Best of luck that’s why I make my own.
The other stuff is rubbish.

Hi Mark. I sense you are very frustrated and cheesed off and I’m surprised that Olson weren’t more helpful. Maybe you’ve just had enough, but if I were you I would ring them and tell them the model number you want and say that you want it without the neon fitted. Long time ago now but when I ordered from them I’m fairly sure I did it by ‘phone as I don’t think there was any way of specifying ‘no neon’ when ordering on line. This may be the problem and that’s why I suggest you ring them. I found they were extremely helpful on the ‘phone.

If you really can’t face any more messing around then just keep the MCRU block. It will still easily out-perform the Tacima, if only by virtue of it not having any nasty filtering in it. But my advice is give Olson a ring, surely worth a try to get something so much better?

I wouldn’t advise that with an Olson unless you know exactly what you are doing. The inlet cable doesn’t just connect to a 3 way connector, it’s split so earth connects as well to the metal casework. Can’t remember exactly, but anyway it’s not just a simple straight forward thing as you might suppose it is.

If they were that useless when I placed an order I certainly wouldn’t touch them. People sing the praises of the Olson - clearly the latest flavour of the month - but has anyone actually compared one with your MCRU? The latter is a well regarded company and I’m sure it will be fine. Build quality is often not the same as best sound. I’d stuff it back under the rack and ask Richard to close the thread. Otherwise you’ll have people banging on about Olson or nothing ad infinitum. That’s what I’d do anyway.

Yes perhaps that was it, but surely they should just have highlighted that. The emails were just “computer says no” so I really don’t feel like giving a company like that even a small amount of cash. All it would have taken was a single one of their replies to me to say “sorry we can’t do that via the website, but if you give us a call I am sure we can sort you out”. Happy customer and a few quid in their coffers.

This was their last reply.

“If a modification is required, it should be discussed with us before placing an order.
In your case, you contacted us beforehand, and we advised that we are unable to offer a suitable solution beyond the standard products we supply.
We sincerely apologise, but we have tried to explain the situation clearly.
As a result, we will cancel your order and process a full refund.”

Good idea. @Richard.Dane please could you close this off. Thanks. Mark
