Following the purchase of Nordost Tyr 2 mains cable it has made me question whether Naims powerlines can be bettered on my Reference system.
I have now 3 mains blocks including Wireworld Matrix 2, Musicworks G4 and Puritan PSM 156.
I have a whole host of mains cables including Chord Epic x 2, Naim powerline x 7, Naim powerline light x 2, HB labs cable x 1 and 2 x Puritan Ultimate cables on order and of course my newly acquired Nordost Tyr 2.
Within the area of the racks are 3 different power sockets to choose from.
My experience has been that many power cables in comparison with Powerline remove the groove and add definition and edge. I ended up missing the groove to much. Haven’t tried any of your cables except Puritan Ultimate on my Naim boxes. I see the power cable as an extension of the power supply design.
There will be changes in all directions with other brands. Challenge is. Is it different or better. Good luck
I put the Naim powerline back in, in place of Nordost Tyr 2. It’s a question of experimentation. You can do the tests and say X is better then Y. But it’s living with it. Naim is designed to work together as an ecosystem.
I bought the Nordost Tyr 2 specifically for the Marantz SA10 and it sounds wonderful, better than Naim powerline.
Whether the Nordost works with Naim kit long term is a different matter.
But when they come up with a new version there are dealers with trade ins…….but they have become rather expensive as you go up the ladder….a familiar story.
I never pay dealer prices if I can avoid it. Wait a few years normally and pick up a used deal.
But my Puritan 156 gear was all bought brand new. And it is a nice feeling getting brand new gear. But ultimately it makes no difference if looked after and 5 years old. Still does the same job!
I don’t feel that the top face of the G4 has a good finish. The G3 top face was alot better. It looks like the finish is delaminating! Probably UV damage. Won’t effect sound.
Shunyata Sigma-X NR power cord + Everest 8000 power distributor made a massive increase in quality with my 300DR + everything else in the system.
I tried both from the wall with a simpler power cord, into the wall with the Sigma-X NR and then into the Everest with the Sigma-X NR. Each step made a difference but it was plugging the 300DR into the Everest that made the biggest difference.
Naim, in particular their power amps, not playing nice with power distributors or upmarket power cords only holds true for lesser quality solutions. Invest wisely and the performance leap is real with no loss of dynamics or PRaT.
So I have two cables from Puritan Ultimate on order. Standard C13s, one 2m and another 4m.
The 4m cable can then make use of my AV radial circuit on the main board. 4mm radial, 20 amp, which was my previous hifi dedicated circuit.
This can be used to power the SACD players and switches.
Gives option of the 500DRPS on the new dedicated hifi mains 32amp 10mm cable. Direct to socket. The transformer hum is not cured by the Puritan on that box and it may sound better direct.
The 2m Puritan Ultimate will go on the Klimax Radikal 2. I will probably sell the 2 x Chord Epic cables after @Geko has made his visit!
