Hi everybody, does anyone have experience with filtering the mains power when using naim / other components (also concerning humming naim power supplies)?
which could be a good solution at a perfect price?
what exactly is the function of the naim powerigel?
Powerigels are made by Music Line, the German Naim distributor.
They are a basic power distribution device, it doesn’t have a filter.
Centred on a metal cylinder that encases the connections, it has one input cable and multiple outlets fitted with IEC320 plugs.
I advise not using a power filter as these tend to degrade SQ, a few are not so bad, but probably better without.
If you have a transformer hum, that can be the transformer is just naturally noisy and not much will fix it.
If the hum is caused by so called DC Offset, which is asymmetric wave distortion (AC wave distortion) then a purpose made DC filter might fix it.
To check for “DC”, if the hum varies both humming sometimes, sometimes nothing, or it varies in tone and volume and at different times, then it more than likely a “DC” problem.
Search the forum for DC Filter recommendations.
The most important thing with star earthing (grounding) is it’s part of the signal circuits, not the power circuit.
That said, my power dist set up is all star ( it’s correctly called radial in power circuits )
By “all” I mean L,N & E are all connected in radial.
It depends what country you live as plugs/sockets will vary, but the basic principle is the same – see the diagram
My radial set up from wall socket …

into my own built Power Dist Board fitted with Unswitched Double Sockets
The alternative to ‘Radial’ (or Star as you call it) is the far more common ‘Busbar’
Mike,
I’m observing your diagrams - I’d call them series and parallel - but I struggle to see how and why the radial (star) one should give any benefits other than employing more wire… The paths seem absolutely similar.
Infos sincerely appreciated.
Thanks
Max
Strange - the Powerigel is effectively the same as the Grahams Hydra, albeit with the connections to the multiple IEC cables in a fancy sprung foot suspended cylinder.
Yes! You should get the Puritan PSM156. It’s very good. Helping providing clean power to all your Naim boxes. The construction is very sound and sounds good as a result.
The cable to the wall and the six cables to the components on the powerigel are much too long for what I needed, and created an enormous bundle of wires sprouting out.
But also, I did not have the one made of powerlines, I had the one made of more basic cables that seemed worse in quality compared to the Grahams Hydra cables.
