Does anyone know whether the top surface is “solid” wood, or veneered - specifically around the volume knob? I’m tempted to get one (much prefer the lighter colour than the standard version), but would think twice if the recess is just “formed” veneer rather than solid.

I think it’s all veneered. Mine looks lovely 
It’s veneer- it wouldn’t be able to ‘flow’ around the volume dial recess if it were not - but it’s solid wood veneer. Ayous, to be precise. Would urge you to see one in real life - they look stunning, and you can see/feel the craftsmanship.
