Mu-so 2nd Gen – Firmware update failed → yellow boot LED, 2-4-10 on reset, no sound, DSP offline

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone from Naim support or the community can help.

My new Mu-so 2nd Generation is currently unable to play any audio after a failed firmware update, and I believe the DSP firmware is corrupted.

How the issue started

I initiated a firmware update through the Naim app. The LED turned solid blue, indicating an update was in progress. However, the update stayed on the blue LED for a very long time (much longer than usual). I thought it was stuck, so I made the mistake of resetting the device during the update. This is most likely when the DSP firmware became corrupted.

Symptoms now

  • Device powers on

  • During boot the LED stays solid yellow for a long time

  • Once booted, the LED is solid white and the interface works normally

  • The Naim app sees it and can stream to it

  • Internet radio plays (bitrate/sample rate visible)

  • BUT: absolutely no sound from any source

  • Analog input also silent

  • Volume ring responds, but the speakers produce nothing

LED reset error code

When I perform the reset (pinhole):

:right_arrow: 2 red flashes → pause → 4 red flashes → pause → 10 red flashes → repeat

This is the documented DSP failure code.

Diagnostics (from Naim “Configuration Diagnostics”)

My current firmware version is: 4.5.0.6644 (I cannot reinitialize the firmware upgrade)

The diagnostics show:

  • OS/system services running correctly

  • Internet connection OK

  • Upgrade servers reachable

  • Streaming engine works

  • No DSP information at all

  • softAp: down

  • Audio pipeline inactive

  • Device capable of entering update mode

This confirms that only the DSP subsystem is not booting.

Update Mode

I managed to access the internal updater via web. It shows the recovery interface:**“Upload a software image (.upd)”**Status: “Ready to update. Waiting for instructions.” So the device is ready for a full recovery flash.

BUT:

There is no public download firmware, and the updater will not proceed without a valid .upd file.

What I need

Could someone from Naim or anyone who knows the correct escalation path please advise how I can obtain the newest firmware so I can upload it using the built-in update mode?

Thanks in advance!

I would try contacting Naim support, either by phone or by email. Contact details here;

Thanks, Richard! I’ve already sent them an email and am waiting for a response. However, I wanted to try reaching out at the community level. If I find a solution, it could benefit others as well.

OK great, you should have received back ticket number immediately. If not, check your junk folder.

Gluons welcome to these fora.

I understand your Muso has successful internet connectivity, is that by WiFi or ethernet LAN cable?

If you are using WiFi thus far, could you move your Muso close to your router and try repeating your diags with an ethernet LAN cable.

I thought I’d just have a quick review of my Bentley Mu-so2 settings for you:

The various sub-components installed in my Bentley are

System Product Version is 4.5.0.6644

OS Version is 4.5.0.2284

DSP Version is 0.7.20.1576

I understand firmware v4.5.0.6644 is the generally (current) available version from Naim.

Kind regards from a retired Network designer/engineer

Hey Dugby! Thanks for the warm welcome!

I appreciate the advice! While researching, I found a few threads mentioning this, so I tried both Wi-Fi (which has a good range) and LAN. It seems to have proper connectivity since I’m getting a pop-up indicating that the current version is the latest one, although I don’t see the DSP version in the device logs.

Thank you for sharing your firmware infos.

One question I have is: do we know why they aren’t sharing the firmware publicly, as they do for other Naim devices?

Naim don’t share the firmware publicly for any unit that updates “over the air”. So only for the old green screen streamers and unitis basically.

But if you need to reinstall it, then you should contact Naim technical support and they will be able to help you.

The DSP Version should be displayed via the “Naim Focal App” which is V8.0 on an iPhone.

Select the top right corner settings icon, then

- DSP version should be the last field,

Thanks! This is what I found there, and I believe it confirms my assumption that the DSP firmware is missing. It’s a pity I haven’t received any response from Naim support yet — a bit disappointing, to be honest.

Hope Naim contacts you soon. The Mu-so 2 is a wonderful music player for its product segment, I sleep wth mine every night !!

Last year I lodged a service inquiry through the Naim service link on their website, My Naim product was correctly registered (within warranty period) and all my contact details correctly provided.

Four days later and unexpectedly, my local dealer contacted me with Naim’s response to my inquiry.

If you are in the UK then I suggest phoning Naim rather than email. That is likely to resolve what happens next immediately. The email route does seem to be a bit hit and miss, for whatever reason.

Hey everyone! I received an email from support with the firmware.

I performed the update using the internal update interface via the web over an Ethernet connection.

The update process completed successfully, and the unit rebooted normally, but it’s still not working—though some things have changed.

Before the recovery update

  1. The issue started during a firmware update initiated from the Naim app.

The LED stayed solid blue for a long time, so I assumed it was stuck and reset the unit.

  2. After that reset:

    • On every boot, the LED stayed solid yellow for an extended time.

    • The device eventually appeared in the Naim app.

    • All streaming functions (AirPlay, internet radio, etc.) appeared to start.

    • However, there was no sound on any source, including analog input.

  3. Performing the rear pinhole reset resulted in the repeating LED pattern:

    2 flashes → pause → 4 flashes → pause → 10 flashes

  4. In the Naim app “More” information screen, the following versions were shown:

    • OS Version: 4.5.0.2284

    • Boot Version: 0.0.132196.xa81abb0

    • Host Version: 0

    • Host BSL1 Version: 0

    • Host BSL2 Version: 0

    • DSP Version: 0

  5. The device was able to enter Update Mode via Web

After the recovery update (.upd)

  1. The update process completed without errors and the unit rebooted.

  2. The “More” information screen now shows:

    • OS Version: 4.5.0.2284

    • Boot Version: 0.0.132196.xa81abb0

    • Host Version: 2.1.7.23413

    • Host BSL1 Version: 2.1.6.23411

    • Host BSL2 Version: 2.1.6.23411

    • DSP Version: 0

  3. The behaviour after boot is still the same as before the recovery update:

    • LED stays solid yellow for a longer time during boot.

    • The device appears in the app normally.

    • Streaming functions start and show bitrate/sample rate.

    • There is no sound output on any input.

    • The volume dial responds but audio output does not start.

  4. The LED pattern during a reset remains:

    2 flashes → pause → 4 flashes → pause → 10 flashes

These are all observable symptoms before and after the recovery update.

How new is “new”? If it’s less than 30 days and you’re in the UK, you have a right to return a faulty item and receive a full refund.

Roger

It’s new—I bought it just a week ago. Unfortunately, I’m from Poland, but it seems I will have to return it to the seller.

Isn’t there a 14 day cooling off rule in the EU?

Martin

I returned it to the store yesterday and asked for a new one, but they need to send it to the distributor before they can give me the replacement.

Yes, Poland follows the EU 14-day cooling-off rule for distance (online) purchases. This means a consumer can return a product within 14 days after receiving it without giving any reason, and the seller must refund the full amount. However, this rule applies only to online or distance sales; for in-store purchases, returns depend on the shop’s policy, but warranty and defect-related rights always apply.

Thanks for explaining that, good luck
