My First Naim Experience - Naim Nait1 + Linn Index

Hello all, this is my first time posting after recently lucking into some pretty amazing gear! I went to my local Value Village without many expectations as there hasn’t been a ton of great vintage gear in lately. But sure enough there was a Naim Nait1, original bronze text/red light version, in nearly completely mint condition. At that point I knew nothing more about Naim than that they’re a good, well, “name”. Saw the price tag of $19.99 and figured I’d risk it. Right beside it for $14.99 were a pair of Linn Index speakers with slightly peeling (but fixable) veneer. I’d been wanting to try a pair of Linn speakers for awhile and for that price I couldn’t say no.

So I got them all home, hooked up the speakers with my finest speaker cable I had available and sure enough… nothing but oscillating “woop-woops” coming through the speakers. Did my research and found I was going to need NACA4 cables. So I decided to go back to Value Village (a week later no less) and sure enough there was a big bag containing a pair of NACA4 cables and a DIN to 4 RCA cable all for $7.99.

Finally got things hooked up properly and my god… pretty darn incredible stuff coming out of this tiny little amp. For reference, my main daily driver receivers are the Yamaha CR-1020 and the Heathkit AR-1500a. I thought for sure before I listened to the Nait1 that it was going to wind up a bit of a curiosity. Mostly on the shelf for “audiophile history” clout or something. But I can’t stop listening to the thing. The phono stage is remarkable. The way it handles high-res digital files is astonishing. My CDs have never sounded better! Everything, regardless of genre, just sounds so musical and satisfying. Right now I have it hooked up to a pair of Mirage SM-1 (original version) speakers and they just absolutely sing! Other speakers I’ve tried with it so far have been the Yamaha NS-570, Yamaha NS-645, and the Braun L-8100HE. The 570s really came alive in a way I wasn’t used to. I have been mostly using my 1978 Rega Planar II w/Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge for playing vinyl and the pairing is fantastic!

Anyway, I realize this post is mostly just gushing but I couldn’t help myself once I found this community. I’m still in my 30s and learning and experiencing new things about vintage audio all the time and this little Nait1 really, REALLY blew me away. Colour me insanely lucky that I was able to stumble into some of the finest gear I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. Cheers!

Wow, you picked up quite the bargain there. NAITs in good condition can sell for hundreds of pounds and probably more in dollars. The bronzing of the fascia (originally the logo etc.. was a silvery white) indicate that the fascia is original and would date the build of your NAIT to sometime in 1985. Well done!

Wow, you really lucked out there!

Lucky guy!

Holy cow…That’s a real find! Great stuff. Congratulations.

Wow - thought this was a joke … the prices are insane. In a good way. But higher priced purchases may follow … be warned.. Wellcome to the forum!

Welcome Hartley! I’m of the similar age group, and defo shared the IDENTICAL amazing experience with you when first heard of Naim chrome bumper amps : -) Back then people do really know to enjoy life and music!

As Drago said be warned of massive late investment and I’m on this road already… ; -)
