Arrived today. Plugged in the NAPSC. Works fine so I hooked up the 202, the hi cap and my 150X. I have no source components (or speakers) for it yet. Using the Narcom 3 handset, the volume knob goes up silently but when you turn it down (using the handset) there is a whirring sound coming out of the preamp that is not there when you turn it up in volume. Is this whirring sound normal? I also have a pair of 5 pin blanking posts, one that came with the hi cap and the other w the 202. Should they be installed and if so, where?
Do you mean you are getting motor noise breaking through the music signal, or just a physical noise from the motor itself?
If you’re using the HICAP and the NAPSC then there’s no need for the blanking plugs, but do keep them safe for the future (put in the box)
Apologies, just re-reading and as you say you have no speakers it must be just a noise coming physically from the unit itself. Check that the volume knob is not pushed too far into the body of the unit (otherwise it can rub and then the motor labours). Otherwise it may be that the LED wires have bound up on the spline. That will require careful removal of the knob and re-dressing - not so simple, so check for rub first.
If it is just a whirring sound it is likely the little motor that drives the volume control. A small motor sound is normal. It is the same on my 202.
The blanking plugs you describe are for bridging power pins if one is not using a separate power supply like your Hicap. There may also be a plastic cap over one of the Aux2 that has a power outlet to power a Stageline or Superline.
There should not be a blanking plug for the Hicap I expect they are both for the 202 one if you did not have the Hicap and one if you did not have the Napsc and just powered the 202 from a Naim power amp like your or a Nap200
Good to know it is a normal sound. There was one 5 pin blanking cap that came w the 202 in a baggie in the box but nothing else other than the 202 and the remote/manual. There was no plastic cap for the Aux 2 provided. Do I need one of these?
The hi cap, which is an olive version I bought used as well, had a 5 pin cap in the outlet that the 202 now hooks up with. It is now sitting in the baggie with the one that was in the 202 box.
It would have had a plastic cap on the powered Aux 2 outlet. I think it is just to protect the live dc power in case of accidental earthing and causing a spark but it’s not likely to happen.
The Aux2 cap has no pins it’s just a cover. You may be able to find one on eBay or ask your local Naim dealer if you want to get one.
