Nac 272 suddenly went down

Hi people, i’m new on the naim platform. I have a huge problem with my nac 272. It suddenly went down a few days ago. I switched it on with the on/off button on the back and the display on the front went endlessly on and off. It just doesn’t start up anymore. My dealer looked at it and says that there is something wrong with one of the prints on the motherboard. But because they don’t make these prints anymore it means that my nac272 can’t be repaired anymore. Is this really the case? Has anybody experienced this same problem?

If the parts really are unavailable I guess you are stuck. Maybe worth contacting Naim for their advice just in case they have any suggestions (although your dealer may already have done this, of course.) Perhaps @NeilS would have some ideas?

If all else fails, looking at the price of a 272 on eBay these days you could possibly consider buying one to cannibalise for spares, especially if you can find one that’s a non runner at a lower price. Discussing DIY or unofficial repairs is generally against Naim forum rules so there may be limits on what we can talk about here.

I remember reading that Naim can no longer build new main boards for NAC 272 because of chips that are no longer made or available. The particular problem that post mentioned was a fuseable link on the main board and that Naim had not found a way to repair a board where the fuseable link had blown, which would mean that the 272 couldn’t be repaired in such circumstances. But I think it was @NeilS who posted about that, so he is probably the best person to advise here.

Thanks for the advice. I’d already had a used 272 in mind, but the risk of maybe looking at the same problem again in the future is a bit stressing.

Where are you?

Martin

That’s a designed in failure mode isn’t it? Naim, of all people, are familiar with long term component availability issues and a board is just another component…… And the 272 is a relatively recent product. Leaves me wondering how many similar design ’features’ exist in the NC products?

Disappointing.

Do you want to know where I live? I’m living in Haarlem, that’s in the Netherlands.

Well, I’m disappointed too. But thanks anyway for your answer. Looks like i’m gonna have to find a nice spot in the garden to bury my 272

Well I would see what @NeilS says, as he works in Naim’s repair department. Maybe I misremembered. Also I wonder how your dealer would be able to diagnose that it was that sort of fault rather than one caused by a replaceable component.

Because he sent it to the importer where they have a repair department. In the Netherlands Naim products are first imported from the U.K. and then distributed to the dealers around the country.

It is true that we cannot replace the PCB anymore, but there are a secondary set of fusible links that can be used if the primary ones fail. However, it is really important to check the downstream circuity for a short circuit before using them.

These fusible links are as important as the IEC fuse for safety & should never be linked with wire. I have seen a Unitiqute where somebody linked them out on a short circuit - the result was catastrophic.

Only allow somebody who knows what they are doing look at it.

Regards

Neil.

Thank you very much for your advice, Neil. I will take this to the Naim repair department here in the Netherlands and see what they can do.
