Adding an external DAC to a 272 is tricky because you have to also lose either the steamer or the preamp (noooo!).
Thus a Naim psu is the way to go!

I didn’t realise the technology in a 272 was that old!
I don’t think you can use an external DAC just to bypass the internal DAC in a 272. You’d need a separate preamp.
Roger
I am a very happy 272 user with the XP5XS power supply, so the cheap(?) one…, we think the power supply is a serious sound upgrade…and absolutely no disco boom in combination with the 300 DR and Proac response K6 speakers… but of course I am curious what a new 272 will bring…a real improvement??
I may be able to help. I still have an nDAC/XPSDR/CD5XS in use going to my 272/555DR. The 555DR certainly narrowed the gap, but for me playing a CD is marginally better than the same disc ripped and sent from NAS(Synolgy) with asset. BUT. If I didn’t already have the nDac before I bought the 272 I wouldn’t be worried. The 272 is very very good with the 555 PS.
Choo choo!
Buy a Melco and will not miss your cd’s anymore!!
@Jurgen well there is the convenience factor I didn’t mention above, which is that I now mostly alternate between vinyl and streaming. But an occasional CD thrown in for a special favourite disc/album is just another option. I’ll keep the CD’s until the CD5XS dies, after that I doubt I will bother.
Clear! happy listening!!
I think a Supernova HE is more likely.
Although I think the ndx2 uses the same dac chip as the n272?
I think you have misunderstood my post. I was joking about the use of the word ‘steamer’ when I think the word intended was ‘streamer’
Nice pair of Jeffery West brogue boots there Matt, (if I got the toe shape & pattern right) and, man, what a picture window!
Well spotted! …still have that pair, and count them amongst my favourites.
I live not a million miles from Northampton - so have been a regular at the Jeffrey West shop there over the years. Have faaaaar too many pairs!
I loved my JW, and have quite a few pairs…sadly, my feet have gone a bit wonky in my present job (not much sitting involved over long shifts) so the narrow fit means I don’t wear them often now. Lovely shoes, bunion permitting!
Yes - some of the lasts are quite narrow. I find the Marriott last to be the most comfortable, quite roomy.
As for the view from the apartment - yes - the balcony off my bedroom was the highest point in for 30 miles in any direction (I MAY have used that line before ) and the view is pretty special, and If ever anybody would comment on it, I’d always provide a small dose of reality by adding a “well, yeah, but it’s a view of Milton Keynes” in true Basil Fawlty “what do you expect, heards of Wildebeast, Hanging gardens of Babylon” style.
There is vastly more to the sound of the system than the DAC chip
In fact, in most cases, the actual DAC chip is only a relatively minor contributor to the overall sound, the supporting circuitry usually has considerably greater influence on the sound than the DAC chip itself.
And some manufacturers replace part of the DAC:s internal blocks with their own solutions, like filters and clocks. In fact being able to build that kind of hybrid solutions might have been the main reason they are going with a certain DAC chipset,
