NAC82 for pre, whilst utilizing the power section of Yamaha RX A870 for power?

Hi,

I have an NAP180 that requires servicing. In the interim, I’m wondering if there’s a way I can utilize the power section of my Yamaha RX-A870 Receiver, to drive a stereo pair - so I can still listen to my NDX? When the NAP180 was operational, it was used as an external power amp, with the receiver simply handling surround channels, and sending a signal to the necessary speakers. But if it’s even possible, this short-term solution has me confounded; as I can’t think of how to achieve it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

You could try utilising the tape output from the 82 to feed your Yamaha amp via any non phono stage input. Turn your amp down to zero before trying, and slowly turn the amp up. I would expect that you would have too low a volume rather than too high, but it’s better to be safe.

Sadly, that didn’t provide any drive - nor discernable volume, whilst the NDX was playing.

Can you not use the output from the ndx directly in to the amps phono input in the normal way?

You can’t use the tape output as it fixed level. Preout can be taken from the power supply on the NAC82 - one of the DIN4s

Thanks Richard.

I haven’t had an NDX but is there any reason that a direct output from that can’t be connected to an aux or similar input on an integrated amp?

Sure, an NDX can be connected to a line level input in an integrated amp. Just need an appropriate interconnect and the right sockets assigned.

Great, thanks for this, Richard. I simply negated the 82, by using an interconnect directly from the the DIN out on the NDX - with a phono to DIN adapter, into an available input on the receiver. It’s not perfect, but in the interim, at least I have passable audio. :folded_hands:
