One thing I’m enjoying about the S40 / Nova combo is that Radio Paradise sounds really good, I listen to it quite a lot so it’s a real bonus!
Does 282/250 can really drive up C2? How about the performance of symphony?
I was going to stick to my Focus 160s but the upgrade bug finally got to me. Part of it was that I found a good trade in deal and part was that I was reading about them starting to run out. I am buying on trust, never heard them, but seen nothing but great reviews and a couple of comments that they are similar to the 160s but a bit better in all areas. The only negative was from my local dealer who pushed Contour 20s and said he had very little interest in the S40. Odd, in my mind. Perhaps he was looking at his profit margin! Mind, he loves jazz and my rock/pop preferences clearly shocked him. Lol
I have ordered them, waiting on delivery. I had a second audition I’d the S40 vs C20. I concluded that the C20 is a better speaker, but worked better with high quality recordings. For my normal diet of rock, pop, and 80s classics (my words!), then the S40 just sounded a bit more involving. The C20 was more honest, and the S40 more flattering. Studio vs concert type effect.
Very nice speakers, I have heard them several times at shows, usually in the red, which I think is stunning, but yours look great also in grey, very neutral as you say.
Until last year when I changed to ATC SCM 40 Actives, I used to have a pair of Contour 3.4 , which I loved, !
I am hoping that they work well in my room, which is small and reflective. I have enough rugs, sofa, curtains etc to provide some damping, but it is too easy to max out the bass. As my Focus 160s are ok, then the S40 should be a safe bet. The dealer says that they should be in later this week, so let’s hope he is right.
Just for info, and having seen the comments about the S40 being a limited run and in short supply, I did get an answer back from Dynaudio Customer Services about availability. They said that production continues, there is no defined end date, but that if it became difficult to source any of the components then their hand would be forced. Seemed a reasonable answer to me.
I’ve sort of fallen out of love with my S40’s, it seems as they’ve run in they’ve become a bit slow and dull, swopping back in my Spendor A7’s has been a revelation - so much more detail, dynamics & bass. Has anyone else noticed this with the S40’s or is it just part of the run-in process?
I haven’t had any problems - over the past 6 months I have grown to love them more and more…
Odd Spendor would have more DYNamics than DYNaudio. Kind of what Dynaudio is known for.
I’ve the opposite experience, my S40s have improved over time.
You’d think but I’m trusting my ears
DYnaudio speakers can take a long time to run in, and during the process they will sometimes even sound worse and make you think it was a mistake to get them. Then a couple days later they might reverse again and you think they’re underpriced for how they sound.
It took my C2 Platinum a good 500 hours before they broke in and remained stable, especially the Esotar2 tweeters. Now that I’ve had them for eight months they sound consistently fantastic.
My Dynaudio Special 25s took more than six months to break-in. Be patient…
I’m trialling a pair of Dynaudio Contour 20’s at the moment driven by my Nova. Absolutely fantastic, I auditioned several brands including some floor standers but found the Contours outstanding. Spent a couple of hours getting the position right, am now just enjoying the music sensation. Found imaging, soundstage and clarity just superb.
According to a post I saw on FB (no idea how to share it but it was from a dealer called Loud & Clear Edinburgh), Special 40s are being discontinued. They are getting rare apparently.
Come on, get that rack assembled properly!!
Tomorrow night, I promise! Was too tired today do to anything else, except listening to music. So much more enjoyable than my former Elacs.
