Not sure whether or not the s40 is discontinued or not, but I did have a copy of their own blurb sheet/mag and it did mention that only the grey was still available. So at least for some period of time the grey production is/was still available.
FWIW: the distributor in The Netherlands confirmed to me that both finishes - red and grey - are sold out completely but told me to keep an eye open for the Munich Hi-End show in May …
I did on a Dynaudio day at Signals. I preferred the passives! It confirmed the choice I made a few months before of my Contour 20’s. They’re driven from a Nova, with Van Damme cabling (6mm) and bespoke machined connectors (speaker end). The cabling I made up myself and I’m very happy with it.
Thanks for feedback. One less itch to scratch. I also got the chance to compare the passives be actives not as much in it as I thought so prefer to drive my Dynaudio from Naim amplifier
I read the dimensions out and said there wasn’t much difference between the Evoke 50 and the Special 40s on their stands. Must admit even I was surprised how big they were when installed in my lounge.
I’m wondering if we’ll see S40 offered in new finishes at Munich High End or if it’ll be something else entirely.
The only thing I don’t like on the S40 is that at low volume it is quite bad (to me at least). With my 250DR and sufficient volume like 9.5 mark, it is wondrous. Wondering if a 300DR will make low volume listening better. Like double the price better. Worth it?
The 300DR definitely helps with low volume listening but not a great primary reason for upgrading at the cost (IMO).
I would not say more powerful amp will help with low level volume listening. A bit off topic, but recently I had the opportunity to borrow a different speaker at my house, a pair of PMC 20.22 and although these are fine speakers, at low level they really sucked, and they are relatively easy to drive boxes, 8ohm/90db, compared to my DALI Rubicons rated at 87db/4ohm, both at the end of my SN2. With the DALIs even at 7oclock on the volume knob the sound is pretty coherent throughout the entire spectrum, with the PMCs there were some decoupled sounds, something I have never experienced before with another speaker. This improved at a higher volumes, but nighttime listening was a disaster.
I’ve read most of this thread… I have no issues at all with my S40’s. Low level is! fine, I’m on the sofa 7’ away listening to jazz on the radio WRTI from Philly… I also use a REL T/7i ( 8"active driver 10" passive radiator) it’s set at 30hz, volume at about 25% it’s sonically invisible. There was a lot of talk a while back about how to hook up REL with Naim. I use REL’s High Level input from my SN2. Also the REL Bassline Blue is a nice upgrade cable for REL subs. Also use these on my SN2 …REL cable goes in the cable area and the Banana plugs from my speaker cable into the end of the plug.
I have talk to my dealer on my low volume listening issues and he said a separate sub will help. I am too noob to know what it means. Does a sub somehow aid in such things?
Sure it does. It gives you that low end you’re missing now at low levels. Also a good way to make more money😜
I have two subs with Confidence C2s and a 300 DR. Low level listening is outstanding. That’s how I have to roll on Saturday nights because my wife works Sundays and is up by 5. But if I want to crank it up Friday night, look out, things really shine.
@JosquinDesPrez Great looking setup! I have a question how do you have your REL’s hooked up? Also have you tried upgrading the sub cables?
I have custom sub cables my dealer made based on Transparent Cable. They connect from speaker terminals to REL Neutrik high level connection.
Any idea if I should go for Dynaudio own sub with DSP preset or go for Rel sub as they are more of an expert in subwoofer?
For their size, the S40 bass is excellent. I had the Focus 160 before, which was a great speaker in its own right, but these have a better balance. I am curious why you would put subs with a standmount instead of going for a floorstander if you wanted more bass extension?
DM 2/7 £250 from Richer Sounds (covers missing!), Unitiqute 2 £575 s/h… you don’t have to mortgage the house to get awesome sound quality. Next step is Planar 6/Ania, NAP 100, and more importantly, decant to front room with speaker stands!
Another way to have more bass at low volume is to push back the speakers nearer to the front wall.
Very Nice
