Naim and Dynaudio Thread

Hi RackKit

It’s encouraging to note that they worked in such a relatively small room

The Confidence 50s are pretty huge at 156cm with the feet. I would be sitting only 2.5m - 3.0m so they might look pretty intimidating . The only way to find out is a home demo. I don’t know if many dealers are offering home demos on speakers right now. Another Danish speaker I am considering is the Audiovector R6 Arete which has some pretty impressive technology in it. I briefly listened to the small R3 Aretes and was impressed with the detail and resolution they had to offer.

Benjy - I tend to find the more efficient speakers with impedance and sensitivity work better at lower volumes. In that respect the Audiovectors are likely to be better - on paper. I recently had a home demo of a pair of Wilson Benesch Vectors and they worked really well at low volume. My current Naim DBLs sound like a radio is on in the room below 9 oclock on the volume control. You need to really crank them up to get anything out of them.

These measurements from the wall, is that the from the drivers or the rear of the cabinet?

Thanks.

Curious on your thoughts of Hegel. I sold my Naim gear and bought a Rōst. I’ve been very pleased with it. To me it has a similar sound to XS2 but with more detail. It just makes listening fun. Same as XS2 did to me.

Rear of the cabinet.

Thanks for clarifying @JohnF

Been reading this topic with interest as I’m looking towards upgrading my speakers. I’ve been leaning towards the Contour (20i / 30i) and Spendor D range. However your (and others) experience with the Evoke 50 and the great enthusiasm for the Special 40’s here has made me rethink a bit!

My living room is roughly 25 m2 and I’m somewhat limited in how far I can move the speakers out from the wall, ~40 cm, before they’d become intrusive.

I’m looking for speakers that will work well with my current SN3 but grow with the system as I improve the source and maybe one day the amp … maybe!.

I get the impression the Contour 30i would be too big for the room and amp after reading this topic.

Seems like the Evoke 50’s would be well worth a demo and see how they work with the SN3, along with the S40’s.

Cheers.

I used Evoke 50s with an SN3 and they sounded very good.
I only changed the SN3 because I caught the upgrade bug.

That’s great to hear, thanks! Looking forward to when we can get back to demoing.

Apologies if I missed you mentioning about the SN3, I’ve read through the whole topic today and forget who said what

Cheers.

was the change a big one on the ability to drive the evoke 50 ?

Not at all. The SN3 system with the Evoke 50 was fine and the amp drove the speakers with no problem.
The only reason I changed was due to the fact that the Naim sound, starting with a Nova, reawakened my interest in hi fi and I started tinkering.
Also as I’m in my sixties I decided if I wasn’t going to follow my curiosity now I never would. Hence I’m now into pre and power amps and expensive power supplies. Big cost but much joy.
Go ahead and demo the Evoke 50 with the SN3 you won’t be disappointed it’s an excellent system but I used mine with an NDX2 and XPS DR which was as important as the amp and speakers.

I hope that you enjoy the demo and get what you are hoping for. I posted in one of these threads my experience with auditioning the Contour 20 vs the S40. I suspect that your musical tastes will play a role.

Thanks, hopefully as soon as lockdown is relaxed enough, although I’d prefer a home demo … hmm wonder if a dealer round here has a pair sitting around doing nothing!

Was your comparison in this topic?

Cheers

The ndx2 and power supply is my end game, do fancy trying the qutest too … won’t be for a while though. I can’t see myself going the separates route (famous last words!) although taking a bit of my pension’s 25% tax free just might be too tempting :grinning:

Hi, in this thread in Feb 20. Happy to expand on my brief comments from then, but you will get the general point.

Mark, be warned I was going to stop at SN3.

Whatever you do don’t do that!

Found it, thanks … I also like older rock (nostalgia!), listen to Pink Floyd (a lot) and some classical/opera. Never really been into jazz but that could well change, I’m currently listening to the “Slow Roast” playlist on Tidal and really enjoying it, sounds wonderful and so relaxing.

Hear that a lot on here

If I turn the thermostat down and put on an extra jumper I’ll be Ok, won’t I?

I direct compared the S40 to the Evoke 20 using a Nova, the Special 40 are pretty special, the Evoke 20 to my ears not. Dull and lifeless sound by comparison, I was actually shocked at how bad they were. I don’t know whether the Evokes had been run in or not but they lasted about 2 tracks before I moved on.

I have not heard any of the evoke line myself, but on the AVS Dynaudio forum, there are quite a few that agree with you. Apparently the 10 and 30, 50 are great, but the 20’s somehow sound awful.
