The S40s are very musical and engaging. If that is your preference then they are very addictive. They make a big impact at that price point.

I owned S40s and was very happy using them with a Nova. I upgraded to an SN3 and replaced the S40s with Evoke 50s. As happy as I was with the S40s the Evoke 50s are worth the increased investment.
I’ve kept the Evoke 50s when I further upgraded to pre and power and they sound better than ever. They have a greater range, larger sound stage which leads to a more involving sound than the S40s. I have a 7m x 5m room and the Evoke fill it with sound.

The Evoke 50 got it seems the same midrange driver used in the contour 60…

I have a similar sized room, but it is wood floors and ceiling, plus a lot of hard surfaces. I have tried floorstanders before on trial, but they have never worked for me. There is too much dominant bass, and it just sucked all the life out of the music. For me, it proved that the home demo is critical. Since then, and I tried two different brands/models, I have stuck with stand mounts. They do fire less bass energy into the room, and perhaps the bottom end is missing in the ears of some, however, their agility and balance works far better. I moved from Excite X12s (interesting, but lean) to Focus 160s (detailed and very satisfying) to S40s (a more refined and exciting Focus 160). I am feeling end game at the moment, I could invest more in the hifi, but moving up from the 282/250DR is out of reach.

interesting about the SP40 -

I am definitely missing the excite X16 that I sold - and thinking of another Dynaudio bookshelf - trying to decide between an SP40 and C20…

I still have my F260 which I actually now realise is quite musical in my living room…

I’ve owned C20 and really enjoyed them. I have a friend that moved from F260 to C20he says there are things both do well but is very pleased with the move. He uses SN3 with C20.

I carpeted rather than tiled our lounge when we moved in three years ago as I thought it would be best for acoustics. So far both the S40s and the Evokes have sounded very good.
Value wise I think the S40s take a lot of beating.

How was the move from Contour 20 to Contour 30?

I think GT audiophile also says in his audition of C30 it was considerably better than the F260

C30 could play louder and had deeper bass. In my room I could have stayed with C20 and been happy. Unfortunately upgradeitus got the best of me. In the end I downgraded it all and currently living with X34.

If I may ask why did you downgrade ?

Just to say I love my Dynaudio´s Contour S3.4.
But they sound very different with 300DR than with 250DR. So, judging loudspeakers wo concern to the rigth pairing, makes no sense to me.
So, first where 200/202/HicapDR w/ Rega XEL, then 200/202/HicapDR w/ Dynaudio´s, after 282/300DR/HicapDR w/ Dynaudio´s.
250DR ? No way.

For Special 40s and Nova I use:

  • Tellurium Q Black II Speaker Cable (2x7m - I need such a long one)
  • Tellurium Q Black Power Cable (amazing sound improvement, if you buy a Nova you have to replace the power cord :))
  • Tellurium Q System Disc (difference as after replacing the cables for better ones)

The above set gives an extremely pleasant, warm, detailed, but also not tiring sound. It’s definitely worth trying the Black series (I also have Black II in the second Atom-based kit where they also do a lot of good).

Too much money invested with 3 young children. Plan is to get a pool put in for the family to enjoy.

Yes the excite range was really good. Too bad they discontinued it

What’s your setup now ?

Hegel Rōst, X34, Auralic Aries Mini into Rōst DAC, Oppo 93 into Rōst DAC,Rega P3 Elys 2/Fono Mk3, Nordost Cables and Nordost Qb8 mk1. TT is new for me and loving it. Finally enjoying the music again instead of worrying about my next upgrade. Simple setup but enjoyable.

May be worth seeing what you can get for one of the children and upgrading again?

Hi SS I’m very, very happy with the Hegel it has an iron grip on the Dyns which is something the Naim amps I owned could never do at louder levels but at normal listening levels as you say they are on a par.

It’s so nice to have so much headroom and space on the volume dial with Naim I’d be loud reaching distorted level well before 12 o’clock on the volume dial.
