Absolutely not, that is why I’m not concerned that that sort of bass is missing and that the speakers do work well with anything I want from them.
A good sub can help. I use two RELs with my C2s.
I’m sure a sub could be added but the room I have my system already takes up too much space (not my opinion) and it is a panelled room and therefore walls are bouncy/flexible. I think that a sub would do more harm than help. If not sonically, then certainly domestically so I’ll keep it as is . Still sounds pretty darn good
How about some pics?
I’ll try in the near future but I barely made it to the computer age and digital photography is pretty much beyond me. Fwiw, I did manage to make some noticeable changes. If all my wires were nicely done using Dynaudio’s wire management would really matter…… it didn’t. I had snake some string down an opening 1/2 way up the speaker column and pull the wires thru and then plug into the speaker jacks. A nice touch but doesn’t make much difference. However, Dynaudio needs to work on the owner’s manual and instructions. My room has wooden floors beneath a fairly thin carpet. We had quickly decided on spikes but a Dynaudio on-line instruction said that is if there is concrete below carpet. So at first I tried using the “pucks” that also came and had the spikes in each centre hole. Nah can’t be right , so remove spikes and the pucks magnetically stick to the threaded screw , turns out that is the right way however, they also had little plastic caps in the hole and they could slip out and the magnet is stronger, well since 1 plastic caps missing - 1 without and 7 with. Also removing the spikes and figuring out the threaded screws allowed me to lower the tweeter by over an inch, which brings it much closer to ideal height. So now I can pass out and hear it at it’s best.
It sounds like a bit of mission! I was looking at these as a possible “endgame” speaker, but they are not available to view and audition anywhere near me, which makes me a bit hesitant. I expect I would like them as the Dyn sound through my Contour 1.4LE’s is great. Always good to see what they look like in someone else’s room though!
Thanks, does this mean that if I get a new mac later this year that it will run the ios app on the mac just like my phone?
Yes. It will not be full screen like a regular Mac app, but it does work well enough even without a touch screen. I don’t use it much , but it’s nice to have as a resource.
Thanks so much I did not know that. will be replacing my mac when Apple actually make it possible to connect it without endless dongles…
Hi there. New Dynaudio user here. Bought s40 /red birch finish/, discounted only one pair left . The amp is nait xs2. Coming from focal chorus 706 , s40 is a massive improvement
Congrats, the Special 40’s are special indeed!
Currently running quite old PMC OB1 floor standers but tempted to audition the Dynaudio Special 40s - appear to have exceptionally good reviews.
I have had a pair of Dynaudio Contour 1.8 mk2’s for quite some years now and have noticed that when I crank up the volume they really sound quite harsh with guitar based music - Wedding Present, Buzzcocks, REM, Led Zeppelin etc. I initially thought it might be my listening room but it’s the same now I’ve moved house. Is this a common issue? They are powered by a NAC102/NAP180 combo.
Only if it’s an Apple silicon (i.e. M1-based) Mac. Intel Macs will not be able to do that.
Dynaudio Contours really need a lot of current to shine. The 180 might not be up to the task to play them loud. I had a pair of Dynaudio Contour S1.4 and S3.4 and used a 250-2 (and later 250DR). Now I have a pair of Confidence C2 and it took a 300DR to make them shine, especially for symphonic music played more loudly.
Thanks. They sound great with majority of what I listen to. I’d go for a power amp upgrade but then I’d want to upgrade the pre-amp and we start talking big bucks. Maybe the solution is a speaker that isn’t so hard to drive?
Then I’d say you are just pushing them too hard for the amp you have. Contours are very demanding. A better amp will make them sound better at lower volumes too. When I upgraded to a 300DR one of the first things I noticed was how much better my C2s sound at low to medium volume level, and with more weight to them. It was like getting new speakers all over again.
Ok, so maybe a stupid question but can I just replace my nap180 with a nap250 assuming I can find a pre-owned one?
You can, but you will then need a Hicap to power your preamp. Also, you should really upgrade the preamp first for best sound quality. Possibly also your source if it’s not up to the standard of the power amp and speakers…but you already know that!!
Thanks. I had a feeling it wasn’t that simple. I find the plethora of Naim power supplies quite confusing. So, one answer to the issue I have with my Dynaudio’s is to upgrade my amplification, but that means new pre/power plus hicap. Sounds expensive…! The alternative is replace the speakers - maybe slightly less expensive.
