Naim Atom display ‘after image’

I would let your dealer know anyway. Then if it recovers and you decide to keep it, I’m sure they would replace it later if the issue recurs.

Suspect these screens are bought in, perhaps I am being cynical but I do notice that when parts are clearly bought in then the failure rate seems higher .

You should do this through your dealer. It will be far more effective than asking direct. Just say you’d like a new one. I once bought a 555PS and its front panel was wonky. I wasn’t happy, my dealer spoke to Naim and a replacement arrived the next day.

These screen issues for Naim must be a real headache and whether you are using the old OLED on the older streamers or new tech they just dont go away.

Your Atom needs to go back to the dealer.

If course they are bought in, no HiFi manufacturer is going to manufacture their own screens, any more than they are going to build capacitors, or many other components that go into their boxes.

My Nova display issue:

The problem has not reappeared - I was absolutely convinced it was a hardware fault but I can’t see how unpowering for several hours (possibly longer) would cure a hardware fault, so now more inclined to think it’s a spurious software issue.

I think it may have happened when I tried a new Powerline on the Nova - very stiff plug that probably wasn’t inserted properly coupled with me not turning the wall socket switch off, so the Nova potentially got a burst of intermittent power for a few seconds - maybe some component didn’t start up properly?

If you’ve powered it down plug the Powerline lite socket into the Nova before plugging the other end into the wall socket/power strip and if there’s a switch on the wall socket turn that off first then flick it when all connected.

The Nova’s socket is wobbly to decouple it so make sure the mains lead plug is in firmly as it can make contact without being fully in.

As others have mentioned, definitely mention it to your dealer and maybe even e-mail Naim support to document it.

If an extended power down fixes it, then if you decide to keep it, you’ll at least have it on record if the issue recurs.

If brand new however you might just want to take it to the dealer and get it exchanged.

Nothing I did fixed the Atom display which was why I took it back and exchanged it (for the Nova actually which was not available when I got the Atom).

Hate to break it to you but Denon, Yamaha, Luxman and a few others all do their own caps. It seems pretty common with Japanese makers. If the maker has the economies of scale and is horizontally integrated enough they can and do. A few are even in a position to make their own screens on their streamers. They all make their own transformers too.

Naim is still small and niche enough whereby that simply isn’t possible on several levels.

One does wonder about the point of a screen, other than to make it look flash. The ND5XS2 manages perfectly well without one and in six years with a Naim streamer I’ve only used the screen for setup that cannot be done through the app. Just think of the money and hassle that could be saved.

Do they really make the capacitors themselves or are they buying so many that they may specify that their’s are branded with their own name by the actual specialist manufacturer?

Impossible to say. Japanese companies are highly diversified with multiple wholly owned subsidiaries. I know Toyota own the company that makes their screws (for example).

Yamaha and Denon are certainly large enough to produce their own caps.

I bet Yamaha, the HiFi company, as we know it, does not make capacitors in house. They are part of a huge conglomerate that separately manufactures motorbikes, pianos, boats, and god knows what else. Perhaps they even own a huge capacitor factory that makes 50% of all capacitors made globally - such is the way of the world these days.
I suppose you are going to counter that they actually make a handful of boutique capacitors in house, but you get my drift.

Both my 272 and UQ2 set to 10 seconds to stop screen burn and to lengthen the time before the eventual failure of the screen.

A nice feature would be if all the settings that can be done on the screen of the device appeared in the Naim app but I guess this will not happen.

Presumably a lot of the features are available on the ND5XS2 which hasn’t got a screen, so they must be implemented in the code, so would it be that hard to have them also available via the app for the NDX2 and ND555?

It’s only the old platform streamers that require the remote/display for some menu items.

Thanks Chris, I was thinking I might get the remote and see what options were available from the screen, you’ve saved me a bit of wasted time.

If anything, the new streamers are the opposite. Some of the menu is only accessible on the app. I also find it bizarre that the fancy new Zigbee remote and colour screen cannot be used to play music from your NAS or Tidal.

Because seeing the albums artwork displayed on screen when it is playing is a really lovely feature rather than some manky 1970’s green text.

Thanks all for the advice.

Just an update to say that the screen has now stopped working completely so the dealer I bought it from are delivering a new Atom on Thursday evening.

Fingers crossed second time round…
