Naim audio in 1989 , documentary

I imagine how many things has changed since, not in a good ways….apart some of course.

Thanks FR, it is now 36 years hence.

PS, is that a poster of Michael Jackson or Adam Ant from Adam and the Ants on the wall poster above the tester in the white T-shirt at exactly 5:00 mins into the video?

Great video from a superb innovative company (then)
I recall in that period some automatic circuit process were implemented when going from CB to Olive era.
Still they created a high number of serial numbers before 1990.
The kit they made were often way ahead of its time.

What’s most remarkable is just how much hasn’t changed within the factory in 36 years.

Like most people who started out at Naim in the sales dept. many years back, the first few weeks were spent learning the ropes and spending a few days in each part of the factory. One of the first jobs was overseeing the machine that would select and match the matched pair transistors. You can see it in the video, and I was delighted to be re-acquainted with it on my last visit to the factory - it’s still doing the same job just as well as it ever did..

I was just wondering how much has changed. I was seeing a fully automated production- and test line in my mind. But maybe it still is a more manual process where one engineer assembles and tests the unit?

Nice to see the video, hear an old matrix printer at the background, a plotter to print circuit boards. Brings me back to the old days

Yes, there was so much from last year’s site visit that I recognised. The speaker area now the Statement build area - shelving remains the same. That main white assembly and test area still very recognisable from the visit. Always amazes me how they manage to fit so much into what is essentially a small footprint.

Notable health and safety changes. Old RS/Farnell solder stations with no extraction system in '89. Very noticeable at each station last year. Back in the 80s I must have breathed loads of the stuff - you just opened up the window as required !

Those external antennas shown in situ - now sadly gone.

Good to see those old VDUs and plotters in action. Quite advanced back then !

I think I took a picture of the transistor tester. The ‘Snaic shaker’ too.

All those metal frame trolleys are still in use.

The clip very much shows, why I kept loyal to naim all the years and have never looked over the fence (until today)

Can’t say Edmund, sorry. But I am quite sure others here will answer.

Hi @frenchrooster , thanks for considering my question.
I do hope someone else takes a look at the video and might find an answer to the question about the poster .

But I have another observation (conspiracy speculation) about the video ……I think, even in 1989, a young Naim employee in a white coat working at a bench in a development or assembly area is working on the future streaming software release version 3.11, coincidentally exactly at the video time of 3.11 mins? Is that spooky or what :eyes:.

Maybe, after 36 years in development, the software release will be ready NOW.

The distinctive voice of Paul Vaughan on the commentary, stirs memories of Horizon on BBC2 during my formative years.

Adam Ant had whites stripes under his eyes, but I couldn’t see any, but then the film is very blurry.

ah yes, looked cool, never seen that one before.

Well its a view from 35 years ago.
If anyone did say Mu-so in 1989, you would get a smile back.
We all know what changed with ownership, marketing and products.

It’s like a good wine, it takes more than 30 years to come to maturity. Be patient, still only 15 years, and you will savour the 3.11.

It is indeed Michael Jackson - from the Bad tour. The one next to it is Madonna, from the Who’s That Girl? tour.
There was a Tiffany one too I recall.
All long gone now though :frowning:

Regards
Neil.
