hello, I have a Naim nait 5, it started to decrease and increase the volume by itself.and remains thus in low muted mode.please help.
Is the volume knob moving at the same time? If so, first, check to make sure you don’t have any “ghost” remote controls stuck down the side of sofa or chair cushions.
Otherwise, it may indicate a failure of the volume rotary encoder. Naim can replace this, but if it’s an early NAIT 5 then it can be a fairly costly operation and requires new firmware. Best to contact your Naim dealer and take it from there.
no, it doesn’t move, it compresses on its own, then gets stronger, then compresses and stays in compressed mode.tks
Ah, that doesn’t sound good and may well indicate failure of the volume controller, unless @NeilS has any better ideas here.
This symptom is typical of the old single gang pot becoming dirty/worn, as it adjusts a voltage to drive the IC ladder rather than the audio signal passing through it.
The original pot is now discontinued, so the PCB also has to be replaced to accommodate the newer version. There are also likely a few mods needed.
The Nait5 is a nice amp & deserves a bit of pampering in the shape of a full service, plus any modifications necessary.
If you don’t fancy that - maybe try some switch cleaner in the pot?
Regards
Neil.
thank you, can you be a little more detailed, which floor, which modifications, if I send it to Naim it will be too expensive, I guess
Your local Naim dealership will be able to get a price for you
Not a great deal while remaining within forum rules!
We replace the level shifter IC due to reliabilty issues, which involves some resistor changes & software update. There are also some minor changes to the gain stage, rectifier diodes & relay drive.
Regards
Neil.
The alternative to taking your Nait to a Naim dealer and onto Naim itself is to contact Class A HiFi servicing in Sheffield. They are a Naim-authorised service centre and will service your Nait using Naim parts o bring it up to spec and make any repairs.
That only is true of course if you are in the UK.
fisher,
I’ve had a couple of Nait 5s. It’s a lovely integrated with a few unusual features and a fine, balanced and musical voice.
Not only do I think that it’s worth servicing but I also think that these times of important, not necessarily positive changes even for major brands, make keeping old Naim products in full order a desirable and noteworthy thing.
Best,
M
tks NeilS,i live in Croatia
Consider LASA in piacenza, Italy. They are an authorised service centre too and perhaps an easier exercise.
