Naim NAP100 input sensivity vs line output Wiim Ultra

I have a Wiim Ultra pre/dac/streamer with Naim Nap 100 amp. The Ultra line output can be set to 200 mVrms, 500, 800, 1 Vrms and 2 Vrms. Which setting is best for NAP 100?

2V is appropriate. But you can try on other settings and see which gives you the better volume control.

The NAP100 was designed primarily for use with the DAC V1. That had a 2.1V RMS out, so 2V would seem like a suitable setting. Just make sure the Wiim is not in fixed out!

From AI: " The Naim NAP 100 requires approximately 0.7V of input signal to reach its full power output of 50W into 8 ohms". A higher input voltage than this can lead to clipping and distortion, while a lower voltage will result in less than maximum power output".

To me the 800 mVrms is the best “technical” setting?

okay 2 v seems fair

Don’t ask AI!

I agree with AI as a fair approach, and a happy medium I use with a dCS Lina and NC NAP250, all trade-offs considered. Be brave and decide with your own ears and long periods before switching, but the words of caution expressed here are indeed good advice.

LoL. Rubbish, dumbing down humanity’s ability to discern.

To my ears no difference in SQ between 0,2V or 2V, so 2V is no problem. And with 2V volume control still excellent.

Only a fool would trust AI of the ChatGPT type (large language modal generative AI) without verifying what it comes up with, just as only a fool would believe everything they read on the internet. Chat GPT certainly has been known to get factual things incorrect. . (Different perhaps where AI has been developed and “trained” to do very specific things and thoroughly tested doing that, and used within those limits.) But what that response tells you is that you could do worse than check the NAP100s specification, e.g. in the manual or with Naim, if it is as AI says then on the face of it the suggestion would seem eminently reasonable, giving maximum volume capability without risk of overload of the amp given that Naim amps generally can handle peaks up to typically 5x RMS

That of course doesn’t tell you whether there may be a difference in sound quality with different settings, or whether with your system, room and ears you’d hear any difference and if so which you might prefer what setting might sound best to you - that you have to do by listening.

Just thinking…

Not to get at anyone, but does anyone else think that quoting the response of AI is a little pointless when a question is being asked on a forum designed to solicate responses from people/humans/sentient beings?

A good question.

I guess it could be argued that AI is a tool, and some people will use that tool better than others (and as also pointed out, some AI tools are better than others). So an AI response may have some merit

As long as people flag up that their response is from AI (as was done above ), then at least everyone is aware

I agree. It’s the personal touch and reading about individual experiences that make the forum an enjoyable place to hang out and learn from. I wouldn’t now be enjoying my Nait 50 without that personal input.

Perhaps try to check facts with AI (though it’s very often wrong or makes things up IME) but please don’t simply cut and paste AI responses.

Perhaps there should be a separate thread on this?
