Interesting concept, my brother was quite instrumental in advocating for quality artwork in the Mater Private a good many years ago, retired now. If it’s well done it certainly has a very positive impact on what could be quite a dreary and intimidating environment.
Yes it is an unusual position for hospitals.
I’m a bit long in the tooth now, but way back in 1995 did a master’s degree in patient focussed care, and from the perspective of the built environment, as I am an engineer.
A more pleasing environment improved the patients mind and body and it’s internal chemistry works better with medication, etc and shows faster results and gets patients home sooner, etc.
I use all facets of art, including bringing live music into the hospital for children’s wards and the older patients to reminisc and assist with dimentia.
As it’s a public forum, should also point out all set is sourced through either donation or fund raising. No public hospital budget funds are used.
Strong believer in Art work in the patient care setting. The last facility that I worked prior to my recent retirement was Harborview Medical Center here in Seattle, WA. It is the Level One trauma center for the WAAMI region which is Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The hospital is owned by King County but is managed by University of Washington Medicine. King County uses 1 % of their taxes to fund art projects and purchases. The hospital has been able to take advantage of this large art collection to enhance the interior of the buildings on campus for the benefit of patients, visitors and employees.

Hi @swinnerton
I noticed you live in Ceredigion.
You may have heard of this sculpture project by an old friend of mine.
Jim
Nice work. Very impressive.
I recall doing a study tour of world leading healthcare settings in the US back in 1995.
One memory was visiting a specialist children’s hospital and someone donated a 40’ yatch, which the hospital installed several floors up on the outside of the building, not to mention a few vintage fire engines.
Really impressive
Nice one @CBR600 and whilst you might be a ‘bit long in tooth’ you do an amazing job and i’m always appreciative of the art in my local hospital, there’s some really nice pieces. My friends work / directly support the Art in Hospitals, and one friend has donated some of her own collection for fundraising.
Poor picture in the middle of the night, daylight works better. But I am on it now so there.
This was sold to me on a friday evening many moons ago by a poor student going door to door with his portfolio (actually come to think of it, he sent his good looking girl friend). Clouded by red wine, I thought I needed to have it, poured the girl some wine, which she happily endured whilst yapping to the wife, and went to a teller. Had it framed at double the cost and have enjoyed it ever since.
Yes, thanks for asking, there is sand and other ‘material’ mixed into the paint.
Some lovely stuff in this thread, glad I read through it. Here’s some of our most loved
These are book cover proofs, my wife’s son is a book cover designer and he did these
This was given to me years ago by the late Kyffin Williams in some fit of generosity while I was visiting him for some reason
This one I bought at an arts and crafts festival in Oxford in the 90s. It was made by a sculptor from Kyrgyzstan, it is my most treasured possession
Here is one I bought in Jo’burg in 2002. I needed a change from my up to that stage grey, steelblue and brown realism paintings to something a bit more colourful and large to fill a tall wall. Its oil on paper, with glass in frame hence photography is difficult with an iphone
So here is an example of my darker style oil on canvas. When the evening sun catches it, it lights up beautifully in the middle. Unfortunately not now. Note the fat oil paint applied with knife.
From the photo, it looks quite big Colin. What are the dimensions approx?
I like it, it has a slight intention to be…mischievous.
Yes it’s a fair size, 28" nose to tail and 22" high. Apparently it was called “Warrior” officially but the sculptor said it was a nomadic camp guard, we call him “Sharbek” after the maker
Here’s face on pic, it’s that attitude, mischievous, threatening intent, peace of mind that makes him so appealing
Much nicer that those store bought one quote suits all cards.
Your wife?
I knew the moment I posted it… merry christmas
Same to you
BTW… best user picture on the forum. Legend Mr Hitchens
Ah, he was grand…
Nun standing outside a pub, chastising a fella for going inside “DRINK IS THE DEVIL, THE DEMON THAT WILL SEE YOU TO YOUR GRAVE” she warns.
“What, it’s not that bad” says the fella.”I only drink in moderation, nothing serious”
“IT IS HELL IN A BOTTLE, YOU WILL SPEND YOUR ETERNITY IN DAMNATION”
“Um, well, how do you know? Have you ever had a drink?”
“Well no, as it happens of course I haven’t, it’s terrible stuff, I’d never dream of letting the demon drink past my lips…”
“Listen, I’ll nip in, get myself a drink and bring one out for you too, that way you’ll know for sure”
“Well, I’m sure I don’t know, Mother Superior wouldn’t like it”
“Don’t worry, we won’t tell her”
“Well The Lord then, he’ll know.”
“Yes but he’s wise and forgiving, he’ll understand”
“Well OK, I’ll try just a little, but please bring it out to me in a paper cup, I don’t want people getting the wrong idea”
So fella squeezes past and goes into the pub and orders a pint, with a whisky chaser. “Oh and a brandy in a paper cup please barman”
“Paper cup!” Exclaims the barman…
“Is that bloody nun outside again?!”
