I am considering sonus faber top tier in wall speakers to match with my supernait 3. I currently have a pair of sonus faber lumina V speakers which I love but I will be moving to a smaller space which could benefit from inwall speakers. I want to have a home theater setup and of course use it for listening to music aswell.
What are your thoughts on inwall speakers as main speakers?
Well, in-wall speaker are fatally flawed by using the wall cavity as an enclosure. On-wall speakers are unnecessarily compromised (IMHO) when compared to their normal-cabinet brethren.
Actually in-wall speakers have some inherent advantages by their lack of rear reflection combing. They are popular in studios for good reasons.
The main problem is that changing them is a huge job. You need a new wall! You then need to repaper or paint.
On-wall speakers, are a good compromise. They still avoid rear teflection combing but their bass response is more limited by their small enclosure. That said, I have had absolutely fantastic results with on-wall speakers. I’d really written them off decades ago and now I’m kicking myself. So many apartments in my past with no real hifi because I could not accommodate speakers. Except it is clear that I could have had a serious system with on-walls. I think I really missed out by carrying a misconception with me for decades.
Considering in-wall and on-wall can be very good indeed and Sonus Faber have a good reputation I’m confident you can great results. But auditioning will be very difficult. PMC, KEF, Dali and several others also make in/on-walls for serious hifi.
I had the Sn3 in combination with Sonus Faber Sonetto 2 for some time. It was a fantastic match. The Sonetto 2 can be placed very close to a wall, on a shelf, because it is closed on the back and the bass vent opens to the front. Very curious how the Olympica Nova wall version would sound like.
