Naim Solstice Aro 2 tonearm

Hi everybody,

I’m new with this forum but not new in Naim World. I recently aquired a very beautiful Soltice.

I have a question about the tonearm. If you look at the picture from mine, it looks like the free pivoting part is very close if not in contact with the none pivoting part. This is preventing the correct setup of the tonearm, and more preventing from playing any record (frustrating!). I was wondering if there was any way to lift the moving part up? (I didn’t find any useful information in the instruction book).

Thank you in advance for any thought or advice!

It looks to have sustained some damage in the past which is a shame, is that a cause?. There is a lighter counter weight free of charge from Naim…….i would contact Naim and ask for Jason Gould.

Perhaps @Richard.Dane can give better advice.

It looks like the bearing pillar needs to be raised a bit. It should be raised so that when the arm and cart are playing a record, the arm is level. AFAIK you need to ease off the little set screw at the rear of the arm base to allow setting of the VTA. Once you have the Azimuth right then set the VTA to level using the bubble as detailed in the manual. Then set the VTF and double check on VTA, as adjusting one can effect the other. Once that’s done you can adjust anti-skate for minimal deflection of the cantilever, although some adjustment by ear is usually a good idea.

Is that some sort of silicone residue on the armboard base?

Agh….good spot richard

Thank you all for your replies.

The VTA is raising everything together, so the moving arm as well as the base. No impact on the clearance between both parts unfortunately.

Below is the residue from the tape, no damage. Well spotted!

Maybe @110dB or @NeilS could take a look at the picture to see if anything is amiss. One thing I don’t understand is why most of the metal parts in your picture have ridges, like stripes. No Aro 2 I’ve seen has this, they are smooth.

It looks like the vertical ridges in the base are reflections from the room?

But what about this. Something seems weird. Maybe it’s a knockoff!! Or protective wrapping that shouldn’t be there at all, and causing the problem.

What type of cartridge are you using.

How tall is it?

Here is a picture taken from websites. We see also the strips. But we see good clearance between both parts also.

The original one. Everything is original on the TT.

I just realised my typo error for Solstice. Sorry for that.

Have you spoken about this issue with the previous owner or dealer that you purchased the deck from?

Unfortunately I’ve not had any hands-on experience with the Solstice to be able to advise you further beyond the basics. It really needs the inout of someone who has that experience and the previous owner or supplying dealer would be my first call.

Yes, the previous owner has multiple systems and didn’t use this one that much (reason for selling it). His dealer made the initial setup. I’m already in contact with both to understand what is possible to do.

Ok, I think I was able to find the way to get clearance between both parts. By releasing a Little screw on the side.

Now the clearance is good between both parts as one can see on this picture

But the problem still remains with the tonearm setup: impossible to set correctly the mass (between 2.2 and 2.4g). Depending on the position of the arm, the value is changing a lot.

Maybe the azimut needs some setup, but not sure how it works on this tonearm?
