I have. Supernait 3, LP12 Akurate spec, and a CD5si. I had a visit to my local shop and decided to swap to a Linn DSM4 with Katalyst dac, and Majik 4100 power amp. This involves me trading the Naim equipment.
The Linn hasn’t arrived yet but I’m having serious doubts about what I’ve done.
Anyone have any experience of making a change like this or coming back to the Naim? I can’t say I’m unhappy with the Naim but I liked the Linn on test. When I got home I started doubting myself.
What made you decide to change in the first place - e.g. did it sound distinctly better? Did you just feel like a change? Are you attracted by the Sound Optimisation? Reflecting on this may help.
From your post it seems you didn’t have a home audition. Did you audition with your speakers? Did you compare directly with the rest of your system at the dealer’s. These are both key things to do if you can’t try at home, as only then can you tell if there is a positive difference. If not done, or even if was, given your doubts do as Guinless suggests, go back. But better still, if the dealer will agree, arrange for a confirmatory audition at home, perhaps “sale or return”, the dealer getting the new or your old kit back t the end. Even the SO can be tried at home, pointless in the dealer’s room.
Did you try it in your listening room/space.
It’s a bold move if you have no idea what it will sound like in your own environment.
We switched out my wife’s 202/200 system earlier this year for a Majik DSM and we’re very happy with the results. There were Pro’s and Con’s of course, but a home demo for a good couple of weeks proved that it worked for us.
Good luck.
I haven’t tried it at home. I have no complaints about the Naim kit and really like the sound. I was just carried away at the dealer and what I heard in the store.
I’m going to ask for a home demo and see where I go.
There isn’t a right or wrong answer to this. It is down to what you want from your system, and none of us can answer that question for you. I think going for a home demo is needed, and that you are going to ask for this seems a very wise next step. I do feel a bit concerned that the dealer was attempting to sway you rather than letting the system being demoed do the convincing. I have always felt that if in doubt, hold off for a while before buying.
Please do an extended demo at your own home. I used to be a longtime Naim owner and switched two years ago to a Selekt DSM with Organik DAC. Initially, I was very happy with the new sound, but later I missed the Naim ‘drive’ and switched back to my trusted Nova.
All I want to say: be careful and spend your cash wisely!
Would you mind explaining what the DSM4 is? Is it a Majik or Selekt or what? If it’s the Magik I thought they had an amplifier already. Which speakers to you have? As the 4100 is a four channel amplifier, is the idea to passive biamp? You don’t seem to have a streamer at the moment, so is the idea to move to streaming? As you’ll see, I’m confused!
It’s really easy to be persuaded into an impulse buy in the store - after all that’s one of the reasons it’s there .
I gave the Selekt DSM a serious thrashing, sorry audition, earlier this year and really, really liked it for all sorts of reasons, not least a one box solution, the Organik DAC SQ and the Edition version build.
But……. I still preferred the Naim delivery, including the Nova PE which I briefly compared on the day to hear Naim’s Class D amplification.
You absolutely need a home demo if at all possible.
If that’s so the ‘all the eggs in one basket’ approach encapsulated in the Selekt DSM might not be for you…… you really want to be streaming for at least some of the time with such a powerful streamer. And, If it goes on the Fritz you’re SOOL till it’s repaired which, depending on your location, might take a while. And, here and elsewhere, there’s a few posts on Linn’s post-end-of-production repairs and support that, if accurate, give some pause for thought.
These are not comparable if you intend using the Linn’s properly implemented Space Optimisation. This can only be done in your own home and will take half a day to set up.
Indeed, for once it’s done it’s done and going back will be *uncomfortable * to say the least .
And, to get down to brass tacks, more accurately money. The Linn and Naim (200 Series) have at least one thing in common, they are both going to cost you a lot, a whole lot, of money. Changing from one to the other will cost a lot of money….. again!
Personally I struggle to square the circle of the cost of a loaded Linn Selekt against the inherent flexibility/redundancy (to a degree) of a similar ‘loaded’ and priced 200 Series, but that just might be my instincts.
Do you have a long history with this dealer? Are they familiar with your likes and dislikes regarding gear selection? Moving from Naim to Linn without a hone audition is fairly risky. Linn also has a questionable history regarding continued product support. For what the move to Linn will cost, have you considered the Naim series 200 system which will give you streaming?
Thanks for providing the further info. So it sounds as though you’d be selling the Supernait 3 that you really like and getting a Selekt Katalyst and a four channel Magik amplifier. That would give you streaming that you don’t need or seem to want, and biamping that’s of little practical benefit, all
in two boxes from different series that don’t match and that cost upwards of £10,000. So a nice little earner for the dealer and a net cost of £8,000 to you.
My conclusion is that the dealer is a money grabbing bastard with no interest in you whatsoever. You should tell them where to stick it, and never set foot in their premises again. This sort of dealer is the scum of the earth and doesn’t deserve to be in business.
So now you have some cash available. Hurrah! The Supernait is great, as are the speakers. The LP12 is lovely. Your CD player really isn’t good enough for the rest of the boxes, so what you should do is get a really nice CD player to replace the Naim. I’d look at something around the £5,000 mark, maybe a Luxman or something like that. But don’t buy it from your scumbag dealer. Find someone decent. And if you want to improve things further, you can always throw some money at the Linn.
And my system started off as a SuperUniti, evolved through a 272 to my current 222 - same Naim App throughout, evolving but relatively bug free, controls the whole system. Not perfect of course but more than good enough. Prior to this I bounced between Innuos, Naim and 3rd party UPNP apps to access the Synology NAS.
Perhaps there are other systems equally integrated but I’ve not found any within my budget…….
