ND5 XS (1st Gen) – Volume Control via App no longer working after repair

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone might have an idea about this issue.

My ND5 XS (first generation) has been in for repair twice over the past year and was therefore out of service for quite some time. After the last repair, it was returned to me reset to factory settings. I’ve since reconnected it to my network, reinstalled everything, and paired it with the current Naim App.

Everything is working fine - the streamer connects, plays music, and the physical Naim remote still controls the volume of my Supernait amplifier as expected. However, one thing no longer works: volume control via the Naim App. Before I sent the unit in for repair, this worked perfectly. Now the volume slider is missing, and I can only adjust volume using the remote. Has anyone experienced the same issue or knows how to make this function available again? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Dirk

Do you have system automation enabled, and a SA cable from streamer to amp?

Did you use digital volume control? If so, you need to set volume mode to variable in the settings. It was probably reverted to fixed during the factory reset.

There is no digital volume control. He needs system automation.

Cable is connected. Otherwise I couldn’t control the Supernait with ND5 xs remote unit. My best guess is that the latest Naim App is causing problems to 1st Gen Streamer.

Can u please explain in more detail. I‘m using ND5 xs remote unit to control Supernait volume. So there is automation already or do I miss something?

It’s been a while since I used a 1st gen streamer, but I seem to remember that the Streamer remote could still control the Supernait volume independently of the system automation connection.

In addition to the SA cable, you need to ensure that SA is correctly set up in the streamer settings.

Hi Chris, the manuals turned out to be very helpful. I followed the instruction (not even knowing what I’m doing ). All went well!! Thank you very much. The only unpleasant thing I noticed is the radio station list disappeared. Looks like Naim vtuner is no longer available. Unfortunately, my first-generation ND5 XS can no longer access paid channels via vTuner. It’s a shame that a version update has led to a feature downgrade. If I understand correctly, only the successor model can still access pay stations such as RadioTunes. Now I’m in a dilemma. The ND5 XS 2 seems to be a discontinued model. It doesn’t seem smart to buy it now and then see a new device in my dealer’s shop window in a few months. Nevertheless, thank you again!

Dirk

Glad you have sorted the volume control.

I’m not sure how paid radio stations work with Naim’s new iRadio service. They had no choice but to move on from vTuner, and their new in-house service is very good on the whole.

Remember to delete any presets you had saved from vTuner as you’ll need to save to save these afresh to get them to work now. Also check that your streamer firmware is up to date to get the new iRadio service.

If you have any issues with specific stations you can use this thread to ask for help:

The ND5XS2 has indeed been discontinued recently, but it still uses the latest streaming board that the current product have, so it should be supported for a long time. Now might be a good time to hunt out a bargain as retailers seek to clear out any remaining stock.
