ND5 XS2 as transport to NDS - signal not found

Hi there,

Looking for the collective wisdom of the community on the is issue.

I use a DC-1 for the connection. For no apparent reason the NDS looses the signal. I restart the PS 555 for the NDS and the ND5 XS2 itself and it corrects itself but there does not seem to be any specific order for the restart. Additionally this does not always fix the problem.

I tried 5 times this morning and it is still not corrected. All other inputs for the NDS work perfectly. I can see both the NDS and the ND5 XS2 on the Naim app.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Disconnect the NDS from the Internet.

I suspect the DC-1 is defect. Try a different digital cable to verify it is OK or not.

Agree. My DC-1 gave a similar fault with my nDac. Tried a cheap alternative and problem disappeared. I stupidly got the DC-1 fixed by naim at a cost of £160. Should have binned it. I now use a £25 Mark Grant cable and can hear no difference from a ( working) DC-1. Definitely a over hyped naim cable IMO.

Thank you both. I will try over the weekend

Is the output setting on the ND5XS2 still set for digital BNC?

How do I select output sockets on the ND5 XS 2?

  1. Touch the Settings icon within the Naim application.

  2. Touch Output Settings.

  3. Touch the desired output setting from the available options:
    DIN
    RCA
    DIN+RCA
    Digital BNC

Yes. Surely it would not work at all if the output setting was not correct?

Thanks. I will experiment. It is on my network but not directly into a router so I cannot disconnect it from the internet. If I disconnect it then I cannot use the NAS

The Nd5xs2 will be connected to the nas.

Stream from the nas to the Nd5xs2, then connect the nd5xs2 to the NDS via spdif coaxial cable.

NDS doesn’t need to be connected to ethernet network.

Aha. Thank you

Out of curiosity, was that a bnc>bnc version between two Naim components, or otherwise?

Bnc to bnc. Between nd5xs2 and nDac.

One end had come adrift and required a new bnc connector. Naim remade both ends for the money. But it forced me to try a few other cables. The MG got good reviews so was purchased and the dc-1 sent to ebay. Realised it was another naim cable that required wresting with, which likely led to the poor connector.

Anyway, gone now and a MG in its place.

Am curious as to whether Naim actually took the time to repair the cable , or could they have just sent you a replacement ( non-new) cable ?

When I worked for a large IT vendor, it was financially beneficial to just dispatch a replacement unit, than to expend time and resources to administer and then undertake a diagnosis, then repair, test and repackage

Who knows? I agree that a simple exchange makes sense. But the cable was away for about 3 weeks.

It is definitely not this. The same thing happens with another cable.

This seems to have worked. Thank you very much. If you have a moment would you mind explaining why it did?

It works because that’s how a streaming transport and dac should be wired up.

I don’t know why it wasn’t working before, as I don’t really know how it was wired/set up before.

Many thanks. I just unplugged the network cable which would have given it access to the Internet. Now I cannot see it on the Naim app but that is not important as it is just doing the job as a DAC connected by a DC-1 cable to the ND5 XS2.

Thanks again. It was driving me nuts

Unfortunately this is reoccurring. Started again a week ago.

For no apparent reason the NDS looses the signal from the ND5 XS2 . The NDS works perfectly with all the other sources.

I have to power down the NDS put the ND5 XS2 on standby, power up the NDS and then take the ND5 XS2 off standby.

It happens randomly, it can be in the middle of a track or first thing in the morning. It is not the network as all of that has been restarted and has been stable for months.

Any ideas?

How about performing a factory reset on the NDS standalone with no attachments, and if necessary a factory reset on the ND5xs2 also with no attachments.

After doing the above resets, set up the NDS as a standalone DAC, and then setup the ND5xs2 as a steamer-only , then finally attach the DC1 between them.

As they used to say in the 70’s - May the source be with you…
