Would anyone have a perspective on whether in a 2 x 555PS DR set up, there’s any difference which output is best used on each 555PS unit for each of the ND555 inputs?
Am expecting delivery of a second PS (2018 recently traded in) tomorrow to join my still burning in ND555.
I was told that either burndy output to either input is fine, and results in the same sq - but let’s face it, that would seem far too simple in the land of Naim hence my questioning whether there’s more to it !
I found that with two 555PS stacked one atop the other on Fraim there is the obvious test:
One will be the Analogue (A) supply (feeding the socket of the ND555 nearest the left when seen from front) nearest the Analogue signal output socket.
The other will be the Digital (D) supply (feeding the next socket to the right of the A supply input when seen from front) on the Digital Ethernet connection side of the ND555.
So is there a SQ difference allocating either 555PS in the stack to A or D? Yes.
Try it - turn-off ND555 and both 555PS - swap the Burndy cables at the 555PS end - re-power.
You will probably have a preference for one configuration over the other.
I prefer the ‘A’ 555PS lowest and the ‘D’ 555PS above it top in the Fraim.
The music flows better and is faster is how I hear it, as small but worthwhile improvement so I will have it - why not try and then choose what you prefer?
You may prefer the other way around - or find no difference - but then you will know for you that and have peace of mind ahead. These things are easy to find out sometimes.
Continuing to experiment with the Custom Hifi Cables gear, I find their Powerblack cable a very good piece of kit: it outperforms the Powerline on both their own DC3 PSU for the Nucleus+ and the Cisco 2960 switch - greater sense of presence, solidity, resolution and dynamism, plus a more expansive soundstage and no harshness in the treble. Very impressive, especially for the price. Daft that it should have this effect on the switch as well…
I think the OP was asking about which of the two outputs to choose. I’d say suck it and see, the same way as you and DB are suggesting for rack position. Also there’s no need to have one above the other: I don’t, though mainly to optimise cable dressing.
Indeed - but I’m limited to only having space for five racks.
Active systems have more boxes unfortunately.
I found the ND555 likes to be on its own Fraim rack (two Med shelves) with empty shelf under.
The 2x 555PS I stack because I have no more space - I found a gap of a Medium level between them very worthwhile.
as a big coincidence a friend of mine has decided to go for a DCS Vivaldi instead of ND555 which i will get it for a good price… so nd555 here I come…
at the moment I don’t have a has, eventually will get one - audiophile or normal one still need to decide -
my question is the performance of the usb slots on ND555…
can I connect just any usb hard disk with music and play?
how is the performance of usb slot?
can it play hi res ?
if I can connect like a 4tb hard disk I might not need a NAS at all… what is the pros and cons of a nas if I am not going to use it with anything else?
A USB drive will give you a very similar experience to a NAS, as the streamer has its own UPnP server built in that serves files from the USB input. What you can’t do is access the drive via a computer to add music, etc. For this you need to remove it and connect it directly to a computer, but it is simple to do, and easier to set up than a NAS.
As for sound quality, you will have to listen for yourself!
Yes you can play any files as a nas or pc,in my opinion it sound better than any pc I had including raspberry pi, a regular nas I didn’t have so no answer for you, now less than a week I use Melco as a server and it’s best of all, even much better
