ND555 upgrade

Hi all
A little advice please. I have an ND555 streamer which is 5 years old. Owned since new.I think it is fantastic. Recently I have been listening to a dCS Rossini Apex and also a Linn Klimax DCM. Both of these are excellent streamers and at least to my uneducated ear have more detail than the ND555. However I don’t think that to trade up cost is actually worth the perceived sonic improvement.
Was looking at a couple of options. I hear that the Chord Company manufactures very good Burndy cables. Are they worth considering?
Also the possibility of adding a second PSU?
My 555 is connected to a Dan D’Agostino Progression Integrated Amplifier via Wireworld Gold Eclipse 8 interconnects. RCA terminals.
Any advice welcome.
Kind regards
Mike

We can’t discuss those Burndies on the forum. John V will be able to give you feedback on the ones he’s sold.

Sorry
Didn’t realize. Have contacted John

I was going to add that I’ve found the DIN output on the ND555 to be better than the RCA output, so a high-end Chord DIN to RCA might be worth considering.

Be careful I moved from NDX to Linn Selekt full spec but missed the Naim speed and attack and am now back with Naim

Hi Andy
Good to know. I have a real soft spot for the ND555
Cheers

Have you got a second psu, it makes a nice upgrade. As for the other brands i found what i gained in detail i lost some of the magic, and lost interest during the evening.

No I haven’t. Appreciate the advice.
I am thinking that I will stay with the ND555

It’s definitely worth giving the second PSU an audition. It makes a big difference.

You may also want to experiment with different ethernet cables, daft as that sounds, they can also make a worthwhile difference.

I also prefer DIN to RCA and am not a fan of either Chord or Wireworld (but that’s with a Naim amp).

Thanks for that. Appreciate the advice. I will follow up

With a rossini you really need to make sure it’s configured correctly for what you are using it with.
Balanced xlr’s out, really if you can.
Having the output voltage correctly set to match your pre amp.
Volume set to 0.0
Using the map and filters you like.

But to add to this i also didn’t like the combo off Dan D’Agostino Progression Integrated Amplifier with the rossini when i tried it, but then when it was swapped to just a Dan D’Agostino amplifier, and the rossini did the volume i found it much better.

Can you run your integrated as just an amplifier and not pre amp as well?
I guess you dont have the rossini anyway at home, so probably all pointless now anyway.

I upgraded an ND555/555PSDR to a Rossini Apex and a Vivaldi clock. Also connected to a D’Agostino Progression Integrated. The difference was leagues ahead. Chalk and cheese.

The only way to know whether spending money on an PSDR for your set-up is worth it is to listen to it, and other alternatives (Aurender/dCS?). Everyone’s tastes are different and I’m sure you’ll end up with something you’re very happy with👍

Worth remembering that while more than a few have moved away from Naim and been more than content, equally a few have moved and then returned. Even without the extra PSU are you enjoying your music? In which case there’s much to be said for leaving well alone.

Lindsay
