NDS and ND555 - comparing

NDS in its new home.

So I recently moved (mid-August), HiFi was packed up, transported the few miles within this Dublin suburb & rebuilt in a new apartment. Very different to the previous old Manor house building, but a newish build (2018), 3rd floor “Penthouse” style, with floor-to-ceiling windows, but very well insulated for heat & sound. There is also internal CAT wiring, with 4 ports presented in a Utility room.

Connected into the 4 ports is a Cisco VPN Router (Firewall, NAT, DHCP) with a WiFi AP (upgraded to a Unifi U7 Pro Wall on a stand - this is a single storey apartment).

One port is to the Cable modem, in “Modem mode” so providing the WAN connection into the VPN Router. Second connection is to the NAS & Roon server ROCK on Intel NUC) in a storage room (Netgear switch) Third is to the Study for wired connection to the desk, docking stations (Cisco switch) & fourth is to the Living room.

Here the feed is isolated through an EE1 before an EtherREGEN switch. ‘A’ Ports to UltraRendu running SonoreUPnP Bridge, RPi running Asset UPnP server & an AppleTV. ‘B’ Port to the NDS.

However between the other unpacking, sorting out the networking, day-to-day work and a business trip for over 2 weeks, the HiFi wasn’t set back up until the 28th of September.

The EtherREGEN (which I had since May 2019) is powered by Farad3 power supply with an AfterDark OCXO ‘King’ with matching power supply. This feeds the NDS Network player with Roon through the SonoreUPnP Bridge running on a UltraRendu with UltraCap LPS 1 power supply. The NDS has twin power supplies for separate Analogue & Digital, with a 555DR for Socket1. Most all components & cables the same, in similar positions & configuration. Additional AQ Cinnamon from wall to EE1, before AQ Vodka from EE1 to EtherREGEN (as needing to a further distance)

Initial listening was good, and only a bit of slight speaker positioning undertaken in the last weeks, just to check the initial placement.

But here we are, 30th October, 30-days in and something happened over the last few days, as the sound has come together and got so much better - soundstage, separation, transients.

The reports are that these AfterDark OCXO need over 35 days to fully ‘warm up’, settle down and stabilise getting better during this period, something I have just heard and can confirm. When I first got the OCXO into the EtherREGEN, I was sorting out the placement of it and the power supply, changing Coax & power cables as well as internal mains fuse, so wasn’t a straightforward ‘plug-in’ & left to settle down. Can’t wait for the next weeks for this process to complete.

The velvet blackness, wide soundstage that I had from the NDS before is back.

The externally clocked EtherREGEN is certainly bringing a significant contribution to the table within my configuration, networking arrangement, and the “Roonify” NDS, sounds great.

Glad you enjoy your system after the move. I moved also in January this year but it took me several months to finally achieve a wonderful sound I have now. Titles floor, big windows, reflective walls…

Can you post a picture ?

Congratulations on the new place, bigger or smaller than before?

That’s a lot of panels & room treatment. Have you undertaken measurements to determine their positioning and purpose?

So this was initially determining table and speaker stand positioning, relative to listening position, TV (which is display only, no speakers), power sources and cabling for the TV STB and CAT cabling.

Applying the initial wiring for power & external signals

Components place & powered up

And earlier today

meanwhile also ‘built’ a new desk for ‘Working at home’ - beech workbench top on top of IKEA Alex draw units (the Ethernet cabling is tidied up now!)

and got all the boxes into the storage unit in the basement - phew

What a great room. So much light

Very nice place, lots of light. Congrats. What is the building in front , not a school I hope?

For your question, I went only by ear, intuition, and step by step. The panels are self adhesive and are light treatment .
On the other side it’s self adhesive too. A bass trap , cylindrical on the front right.

Heavy carpet. It took me 3 months to really be satisfied. Added Chord Music Din RCA and Audioquest Pegasus. Now I can relax.

Next upgrade in 12 months minimum : Nd555 or Melco N50 or Grimm MU2 or better speakers .

There certainly is - sometimes very much so, and it gets very warm.

A-rated, with triple-glazed windows and few openings, as there is ‘mechanical ventilation heat recovery’ system.

Very different from the last place, which was single-glazed sash windows, open fire and drafts like gales

It is the other side of the Apartment blocks, surrounding a Courtyard, with an underground car park beneath. Most of the windows are to bedrooms, with their living rooms on the otherside. So not overlooked.
There is a Primary school on the other side - however, the triple glazing means a don’t hear them, particularly during the working week, when in the Study at the desk.

Have applied some room treatment but to a side wall, that comes out - will post a photo later when its light.

What difference did the Chord Music DIN→ RCA make? Looked at that option, but very expensive.
I got a custom DIN→RCA from TrueSignal Audio, an ex-display piece that they would take to shows and put out. It was delivered by their MD to me.

In terms of upgrade, best to get to know your system in its new location.

Thinking about having a Sound Engineer out for an afternoon to help me fine-tune the speaker placement.

I bought the Music second hand, for 2,5 k euros on EBay. From a lady who lost his husband, an ex member here. I have never seen this cable second hand, specially Din RCA. A great upgrade vs the Signature tuned array.

The Pegasus also second hand, half the price. Maybe more uplift that I heard, vs also tuned array.

Dear @frenchrooster,

For good luck, try placing the elephant with its rear towards the door.

Best regards, Rafael

Why ? Is there some superstition in your head ?

No idea, but that is the instruction in Thailand and other places around.
