NDS Service >> Have You Done One?

From the listening Chair!

My eyes are dim, I cannot see,
I have not got my specs with me.

You hold the phone in camera mode in front of the screen and look through it so to say. Most smartphone cameras today have good sensitivity so they pickup low light levels better than the eye. From a distance this is impossible though so mainly being able to walk through the settings if needed.

They really aren’t new old stock screens. The screens that Naim has been fitting as replacements are different from the originals and even required that Naim re-write the firmware so they could load that when the screen was changed. That was ages ago though. As Robert said, I would get it done now while you still can.

I needed a new screen. I asked if it was due a service but was advised that it only needed repair work if faulty etc and did not need a regular service as other Naim components do.

When it came back the remote didn’t work. It appears that the sensor is close to the screen and can be damaged or dislodged during a screen replacement. This is a known issue. They fixed it and returned it to my dealer within 2 days.

Do you think it would be sensible to send the remote in as well as the NDS?

I would just expect them to get it right, and check it before despatch. I am sure they can do this with a remote on the workshop. I know someone else had the same issue, but many have had new screens without problem.

Where is the remote sensor located?

I believe it is close to the RH edge of the screen as viewed above. I am not an engineer though.

This thread may be helpful. Especially entry No 59 approx.

Sorry what is this?

RH=Right Hand.

I think it is here, but please check with someone more familiar with the insides of these units.

They completely c*cked up with mine and even managed to loose the remote control, damage front fascia. Came back first off with new screen but remote didnt work and chip on fascia. Then they said remote was faulty. Then they lost the remote.

Then they had to source a new fascia amd remote. They didn’t know what remote it used. Was sorted out in the end.

Then I sold it. Lol.

Remote wasn’t faulty. The problem was new screen moved remote control sensor. Any was a bad experience. They sorted it out in the end! But shouldn’t have got it so wrong at the start.

Nice and crisp lettering to read after the replacement.

I mailed Naim re my NDS, last week - they replied back quoting for a replacement screen and also for a service (via dealer)

Thank you for letting us know this.

Can you say what the quotes for these services amount to?

Are you going to do it?

Screen alone is £159
Full service is £449
This includes vat and return to dealer.
My NDS is a 2012 build, so I may get it serviced - I’m going to speak to a dealer first - see whether I should just service the 555PS (£849).

Just to echo some other voices, I’d definitely have the screen replaced. I had the one on my UQ1 replaced by Naim and the new one is lovely. I have it switched off all the time, but it will turn on when you change source/volume etc, and it’s visible right across the room.

I could have made do with a dim screen, but a new one is so much nicer! Here’s a photo from a while back. No noticeable degradation in the year or so since it was replaced.
