NDX fw update to 4.9

I´ve just updated from 4.8 to 4.9. iRadio is corrected now, streaming working in PCM correctly, SQ is better after short test, but streaming DSD is limited to DSF files ONLY!!! I have most of DSD files in DFF format. In 4.8 dff was normal playable.
Thanks for update, but I must go back to 4.8!

Could you not convert your DFF files to DSF.

I have all of my DSD content in DSF as this format permits metadata in the file (I think that was the reason).

Correct @simon.pepper DSD audio files should be in .dsf as this is the format to carry embeded metadata.

With NAS or other local streaming using DNLA/UPnP software it just doesn’t make sense to use .dff. It requires metadate to be carried in a separate file that makes organising libraries difficult.

Use dBpoweramp to convert, but search www as other Open Sourse converters are available.

I’ve downloaded the update by using the links in the upgrade instruction pdf.
Be aware that the link marked with Windows, will activate a OS download and the link marked Mac wil activate the Windows download.

Thanks for posting this. Ive been trying to get the updater marked “for mac” to unzip on my macbook pro with no success. Ive even tried downloading other unpacking apps but no luck, so I gave up for now. Then read your post and downloaded the windows marked version and it works perfectly on my mac. Naim have indeed marked the windows and mac updates the wrong way around. Perhaps @Richard.Dane could flag this up as a sticky.

I have already notified Naim and they will get them swapped around.

Richard, I have just tried to extract the updater on my Mac but says version not compatible with OSX Catalina? 11.5 or later … huh. I successfully installed the Silabs driver…

Naim are looking at that DSD point. In the meantime, if you want to go back to 4.8, the download is on Naim’s website and you can install it in exactly the same way as 4.9.

I haven’t tried updating my own UQ2 yet as I haven’t had a moment to do it (I’ll have to find my mini USB cable too) so I’m not sure what or why that might be. The firmware guide says you need Your Apple computer, running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Hopefully someone else who has done the 4.9 can assist here.

Correct, I have a Mac Mini with Catalina but when I go to run it the icon has the dreaded slashed circle superimposed and the error reads Can’t be run on this system, Requires 11.5 or later :man_shrugging:

Can you update the OS to Big Sur?

No, end of life for Mac Mini upgrades. No biggie, I can always borrow a late model laptop but the PDF does say “Catalina”. So, somewhat annoying. If the upgrade can’t be done on it then PDF needs updating to reflect that requirement.

You could install an Opencore legacy patch and then install of later OS would be possible.

Oh I know BUT for a single firmware update :man_shrugging:

Not just for that - it’s free and means you get more life out of old hardware and don’t have to spend on new kit. Instead you could use the money saved on other things, like music, Naim upgrades etc…

LOL, just checked back here after checking YT on Opencore updating. Sigh, I’m a sucker for punishment. Thanks Richard.

Hi,

I just updated to 4.9 on my NDS and looking to rollback to 4.8.

Can anyone confirm if I just need to reinstall the existing 4.8 update I already have and have used in the past, or is there a special file/version I need to download before proceeding?

Thanks.

You can just use the file you had before. The 4.8 firmware is also available for download on the Naim website, immediately below the section from where you got the 4.9 firmware.

But why would you want to do that?

Thanks for the response.

I’m reverting back because I’m finding my system a bit tiring to listen to since the update, it’s subtle but I think there’s either a bit more high frequency or maybe less low frequency information coming through, the sound just seems a bit thinner and less engaging. This is with locally stored files, iRadio sounds as good if not better than before.

I didn’t mention it because I didn’t want to discourage others from installing the update, especially before confirming if what I’m hearing is real.

Thanks for the info, going to rollback now and test.

Cheers

I know I’ve barely tested, but even after the first track, what I felt I was missing is back, There is definitely something edgy about the sound of 4.9 on my system and glad I could rollback.

Would be nice to have iRadio eventually, but happy with 4.8 for now.

Thanks for your help David.
