Not many replies here, so see if this helps? I used to work in a hifi shop that sold Linn amongst many other brands and have a lot of experience with Majik 140s. They were not a well liked speaker in that store as we could never get them to sound very good. Didn’t matter what we tried them with, they just never seemed to come to life, that is until we tried them in Aktiv operation. Despite the Linn amps not being the greatest when driving passively, when the Aktiv cards were added and hooked up to the Aktiv 140s, everything suddenly came alive and sounded really rather excellent.
I will say that at the time we didn’t have any Naim kit, but I very much doubt the story would be much different to what we found with other brands. The smaller 109s didn’t seem to suffer in the same way and were quite a favourite, but the 140s just seemed to like being run Aktiv.
Thanks. Just curious as they seem an awful lot of speaker for the money and the legacy reviews I’ve found suggest they’re rather good. Thanks for your reply.
I owned 140s for many years. I tried them with a Nait and they sounded surprisingly good. With a Nait 5i they were not such a good match. I would have thought there are better options available if partnering with modern Naim, but if you’re buying second hand then might still be worth a try.
Once you get the most out of them, I’d say they’re something of a bargain…it’s just getting to that performance! Also worth noting that the upgraded plinths make a noticeable improvement imho
