New IOS & Android App Update

Apps are often released in a staggered way so that they don’t appear to all users simultaneously. If you go into the app store you can usually prompt it to offer the update, or try going into the app and select System Settings > Check for updates.

If it’s not showing in Updates, instead search for the Naim app in the App Store, click on that app details, and the “Open” will change to “Update”

Bravo Naim!

A lot quicker, slicker and I like the option for radio on the go via the app!

Apple Car Play as well, nice touch!!!

What say you guys?

That it’s an improvement is for sure. I absolutely agree.

But given that there’s already a thread on this maybe @Richard.Dane can merge the two?

Now merged.

Good looking app ; not used the radio function yet, so will reserve judgement. However, I do have a gripe: the frequency of radio stations has been removed. This was really useful as I use it to retune my NAT to various stations, also I have to retune my UQ when atmospheric conditions require a retune.

Edit: my mistake, the frequency does show as you retune, but it does not stay visible.

Well, to get the message this morning in my car that the Focal & Naim app was available made me think briefly that I must be driving a Bentley all of a sudden… But it was still the same Opel (Vauxhall) that it used to be. It was fun though, amd the app works really well with Android Auto!

@Stevesky This did not make it into release 8 of the Android app? Still no quality information for radio stations when browsing / searching. Bummer

I’ve just updated to the new version of the app and Tidal playback to my SuperUniti seems to have massively improved. High resolution (Max) tracks are converted to 44.1kHz, I’m not sure if this happened before as there were a lot of glitches. To my ears these now sound at least as good as streaming high res via the WiiM, and it’s good to keep everything in the Naim app.

Hi @whatu1tme2b

Not yet on Android. There is upcoming work on the browse lists as various legacy there that needs to be recoded. I believe the plan is to sort it out then. On iOS it already shows, but functionality wise we’re trying to bring Android and iOS more aligned.

I just noticed that the new in-app radio player does show the information for some of the stations. Having multiple versions for different platforms like iOS and Android can be a challenge

P.S. Can’t you offer the Naim Internet Radio service to Bluesound (and other streamer manufacturers) against a nice price as a replacement for TuneIn? Business opportunity…

Hi @whatu1tme2b

The radio service is for Vervent Audio Group products (so Focal/Naim) and we have no plans to license it to others, let alone our various distribution agreements wouldn’t cover such cases.

Also as part of doing the radio system we expanded the playback engine to cope with a wealth of more complex or niche broadcasts formats to gain access to various better quality streams. As we own the design of product + radio server&content so we can ensure it’s all compatible. With 3rd party radio systems they typically have to pick more generic streams that can be played on more equipment where manufacturers use the basic ‘reference board’ solutions. Eg:

  • Use lower bitrate mp3 or aac instead of the trend of higher bit rate aac in hls container
  • avoid lossless streams in ogg/flac+meta or hls/flac lossless
  • Have to avoid streams with timeshift data
  • Don’t offer Mpeg DASH container streams

Good time to buy a new Naim though :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I couldn’t find any current track information while I tried out listening to Radio 6.

I love my ND5XS2 and the internet radio service  Maybe replace my Bluesound Node Icon by an Atom in the future…

Hi @whatu1tme2b

re: sharing data between devices - the account that is required for the new local player feature might come in handy for such things in the future…

The app based radio player is a work in progress at the moment, but it’s an area where a huge amount of time can be thrown at it, We wanted to get it out and see if customers like it. We need to wire in the extended xperi metadata service which has been slowly growing in all directions this year.

Installed the update on my Android phone yesterday and have noticed this morning that the multiroom function on my Muso and QB (both gen 1 devices) does not work. I have no idea if it worked immediately after the update, only tried this morning.

Anyone else with the same issue?

Multiroom works on my setup on Android.

However the Tidal button within the Naim app does not list any results for the Superuniti, window stays empty…

If you can bear the faff, and there may be a lot of faff, a complete phone reset, IOS or Android, may fix any issues that others appear not to experience. There are so many parameters/settings that will have been altered since the phone came out of the box, some by app installations, some by the users, that will have been forgotten over the months/years that it’s well nigh impossible to determine which may impact a new/updated app, eg Naim.

Certainly in Apple’s case, older settings are automatically transferred depending on how you choose to set up a new iPhone or watch.

As always, just a thought based on my own experience, YMMV.

Yes - posted a separate post as it were.. I love it when devs add features but break perfectly working ones :frowning:

I wonder if I can reinstall the previous app ?
