New Listening Room

Hi all, it’s been ages - 3 years - since I last posted here, but thought I would share a few details on my upgraded listening room. My system had been packed up in boxes since January '24, while we undertook a major building project where the whole house has been remodelled. This gave me the opportunity to slightly enlarge my listening room and also change the approach to acoustic treatment. In my old room I had loads of bass traps, and panels (GIK Acoustics) which are great, but I wanted to try and avoid this and create a more relaxed, less studio-like vibe. I have used slat-wood panels on the rear wall, with rock wool behind, which diffuses and absorbs at the higher end. I’ve also found it acts a bit like a membrane bass trap and does have some impact lower down. It’s still early days, and I may add some additional treatment, but overall I’m very pleased with both how the room looks and most importantly sounds.

My system is the same - ND555, 2x555PS, 552, 500, Focal Scala Utopia V2s, Super Lumina throughout.

James and Henry from Tom Tom Audio popped over earlier to replace my Silver/Ash Fraim with Black/Cherry which works much better with the room decorations. We were chatting about my journey to get to this system which started with a call to James in 2008 when I upgraded from a much smaller Naim system I’d started building in 1993. You need a decent long-term relationship with a dealer in my view if you are serious about HiFi.

Some pictures below, and I look forward to contributing a bit more to the Naim Community in future.

Wow! Welcome back - that looks awesome

I know a very good decorator, @Edmund-of-Essex . I think you won’t recognise your room after. Neither the sound. :upside_down_face::chicken::grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

You tease FR, :face_blowing_a_kiss: you tease.

To the OP, your room looks great, I am envious!

PS: FR you should notice the special acooustic wave dispersing light fixture on the ceiling

I tease , yes. But also thought really you would suggest something. Or maybe this room sounds particularly good and don’t need acoustic treatment. Very huge room.

Do you have enough bass in such a big room?
I would see a 6 pack Rel subwoofers here.

The room’s around 6.5m x 5.5m x 2.3m, so large but not huge. I’ve used the room simulator in REW to help position the speakers and listening position, so have got a ‘relatively’ flat frequency response. I’ve just run some acoustic measurements as well, but gave not sat down and analysed them yet. Subjectively bass is fine. The speakers have a -3dB point at 27Hz, so the go down pretty low and have plenty of drive power with a 500 behind them. More tweaking required, but for now just enjoying the music.
