How many millimeters lower is the 2MR compared to the original 2M?
The specs on the Ortofon website tell all, 4mm. See screenshots from the respective user guides below.
@Arnsider Ha ha, yes, it’s going to be an adventure - equally looking forward to it (fixed drains!) and dreading it at the same time.
The height is measured different in those pictures. I believe the correct answer communicated is 3mm difference.
Good spot!! Thank you
And annoying. Why would they do that? They quote a cartridge height of 14mm for the 2MR in the listed specs, as well as show the height on the diagram. But only have the diagram for the 2M, leaving the situation according to the PDFs from their website incorrect, or frustratingly ambiguous, if the difference is actually 3mm rather than 4mm.
Can I ask where your 3mm number is from?
It looks like the total height of a 2MR is effectively the height of the removable stylus assembly - easy enough to measure (or ask a dealer to)
It was a retailer listing the products but looking again they state the housing has a 2mm difference. It’s strange that Ortofon doesn’t publish A/B measurements leaving this for speculation.
Are these all mm carts?
Yep, I’m almost certain all the Ortofon 2M (insert colour here) range is moving magnet
…in fact I’ve just read that’s what the 2M actually stands for, two Ems!
Ouch, blddy expensive at the top end of the range.
I really enjoyed 2M orange while I had one.
I still do and I love it. No plans to change.
I’m not prepared to swap it out for the shallower model just to lose a spacer.
Rather buy more LPs.
I can understand that, but when the time comes where you have to replace your stylus anyway, going with the new lower generator as well becomes less expensive.
And, according to some, it provides an audible improvement. In any case it will be visually more appealing, and it might help with dustcover height problems. These are benefits at that point.
On my P6 / 2M Black, I have added a 2mm spacer.
To be honest, it sounds no different with or without.
Rega are really clear that small VTA differences have no impact on sound. I have to say I agree.
2M indeed stands for Moving Magnet, but they’re actually MI (Moving Iron) and not MM (Moving Magnet) like Ortofon chooses to market them. I guess because MM is better known and peoples phono stages will be marked as such.
For the end user there’s no difference between MM and MI.
I’ve posted this before, an interesting article on the subject of VTA: Exposing the VTA myth? [English]
2m, of course.
I believe you mean Bronze
Thats my preferred 2M, - the Red were terrible and Black I never really got on with this.
I’m more happy with Sumiko Amethyst which is far an overlooked item with fantastic musicality.
rigB 5 with Paratrace is not bad either.
