New room and lack of bass

@Hannu I had good results with acoustic panels, but positioning is critical, otherwise they might soften the sound indeed.

Most sofas (and other soft furnishings have little absorption below about 80Hz, so have little effect on the deep bass.

However their absorption above 150Hz can be very significant and can act as a very effective trap for the mid bass. How much one is personally affected by under-damping and resonance effects in the deep bass can be the difference between this being useful to you or not fixing the problem. In general if the problem is lack of bass over a wide band then that suggests a problem in the mid-bass, and then a well placed sofa or two can be a big help (but acoustic placement of the sofa(s) is very important to get any useful benefit)
