A server or a streamer?
Because if it’s a server that you need, to store cd rips and downloaded albums, you just have to connect it to a switch, on the same network as the 222. The 222 will see it and stream files from it.
I was also thinking about using my external SSD hard drive and connecting it to my NSC 222. And maybe using Asset UPnP as a library.
You can also connect up to 8TB via USB input at the back of Stream 1 as I understand it.
I think I’ll continue with my Zen MK2, even though it sometimes behaves strangely. I’ll then try connecting my external SSD to my NSC 222 and try with Assett UPnP
And wait for Naim to come out with a new Core
I believe so yes … as this is what Sense is built on. I have used LMS for many many years and find it excellent and being free Open Source has fantastic support. Shame Innuos seem to have attempted to make a propriety version using a few non Open Source modifications. Not sure this follows the spirit of Open Source. I recently compared a Pulse with my own server running LMS .. wasn’t convinced it was worth the considerable extra outlay
I might have the chance to buy a used Naim Uniti Core. It is an old product and now that it is also being phased out, the question is whether there is anything new coming? I have a few reservations, as I do not know how old it is and the software is a little limited and it sounds a little difficult to edit files. I probably will not use that CD ripper either. My flac files are on an external SSD Disc and I was wondering how Uniti Core shows an album with several discs?
On my Zen MK it shows Disc 1 -2 - 3 and so on.
I do think it’s a shame they are getting rid of their more average priced products I was hoping they would do both higher priced range and one more people had some hope of affording
My guess is they have found it is difficult being a good value and high end brand at the same time. Like all businesses, you can end up being stuck in the middle with this strategy. You may sell a lot of the good value boxes, but maybe not enough to make sufficient returns, and these boxes may put off customers of the high end boxes. I imagine it is difficult to judge which way to go.
Looks like the statement is toast. I just checked the Innuos website and there is a new flagship range called the Nazare. I do struggle to understand why they don’t build a DAC into it…or am I misunderstanding? I find their description of the products very confusing…
I believe they all have different options of additional modules now so you can decide what you want and pay for. You can also later on add modules yourself. Bit like Linn is doing it.
It looks like there is a DAC option coming (in various grades) for the Stream series, but as Innuous are experts on the Server side, it makes a lot of sense to leave the external DAC choice to the customers and their favoured solution for these models. The I2S, S/PDIF and USB output module options give a lot of flexibility here too.
I get it, it just means a lot more boxes, cables and power leads. Plus space needed on a rack. After moving to the Linn Selekt I’m convinced the future is in more integrated solutions, but I know that’s not for everyone.
More? It means less boxes which was one of the main targets Innuos says.
You can’t use Asset with files attached to a Naim streamer USB input. It won’t be able to access them. You’ll need to put them somewhere else on your network.
I also found out that
Leaving the lower price space as it is too competitive?
You’ve got all your Wii etc. for up to 1k. Plus many traditional brands.
Between 1k and 3k you’ve got the likes of Auralic offering boxes with optional PSU upgrade. We heard one of these recently and for £3k the S1 + PSU sounded very good. More than impressive enough for the vast majority of the population looking for something above the ordinary.
naim will also be feeling the impact of market competition. For the £8k price of 332/333/250 boxes there is an awful lot of very capable competition.
You can tell the age of any Naim product by getting the serial number and asking Naim support for the age. You can also find lists of serial numbers by year, but Focal/Naim doesn’t bother to put it on the website now I believe.
The Core was discontinued because of availability of some components and Naim decided to reserve their stock to support units already sold rather than build new ones. They haven’t announced a replacement product, but then they don’t usually until they are ready. But the general opinion among Forum members is that Naim won’t make a new server at all.
Editing files isn’t difficult but you do have to learn how to do it. There is plenty of information in the FAQ part of the forum though.
The Core shows multiple discs in a set as CD1, CD2, etc. you can edit this if you want to.
