New Shelf Speakers Needed for my NAIM Set-Up

I have Pro-ject RPM 10 turntable(rewired arm) Rondo Red Cartridge, NAIM NAC 202 Pre-Amp, NAIM NAP 200 Power Amp and NAIM Phono Stage with Focal V speakers.

Sadly the floorstanders need to go due to having a child and lack of room in the new house, so need to get some shelf speakers, any suggestions?

KEF R3 look grate but maybe out of budget

I understand the need to get out of the way of little fingers and children racing around.

Do consider getting proper wall brackets/stands for whatever speaker you get as putting them on an actual shelf will lead to disappointment with the sound in my view.

Spendor does some neat wall-mount speakers called AW1. Neat Petits will work close to a wall too.

Great advice, thanks

Q Acoustics range may be worth looking at.

ATC SCM7s or 11s might be good or maybe the ATC HTS 7 or 11 wall-mounted speakers.

HTS11s would be a good choice. Neat Iotas are another and can sit on shelves or be wall mounted.

Wall mounted speakers here in a dining room.
Spendor offer wall mounts and use a speaker bracket called ‘B-Tech Speaker Wall Mounts with Tilt & Swivel’, which are available at much lower cost from Future shop.
I had Spendor SA1s, for a while wall mounted and these have moved to another room.
Replaced by a nice pair of s/h Proac Tablette 10 signatures, which work well hung on the wall.
Worth a listen, but Proac do seem to like Naim kit - audition of course!
Proac don’t offer wall brackets, but careful drilling - just don’t drill too deep - and the brackets are a nice easy fit.
If against the wall, choose speakers wisely, since iirc rear ported are far from ideal.

Unless the shelves are tigid/solid a d either 1) the speakers are designed for using that way (E.g. Alchris Booki). Or 2) thd speakers are put into shelving solidly packed with books or LPs or CDs or whatever such that the front baffle of the speaker is flush with the spines of said books etc*, creating a “soffit mount” or in-wall effect, completely eliminating comb filtering arising from reflections from behind the speaker, and provided the bass boost from only 180° radiation is acceptable (with small speakers the resultant best boost may be very beneficial).

I agree a rigid and firmly fixed shelf is an option. In my experience, wall mounts are better. As for being surrounded by Books, LPs or similar, I have never heard a speaker sound its best in this situation and most often such a circumstance has severely affected the sound quality, sound stage and focus.

I have not heard the speakers you mention though.

I recently purchased a Pair of Totem Loon speakers. It’s for a very non ideal setup. On a bookshelf, up against a wall. They image really well and sound great.

Also I’ve heard Totem Tribe on wall speakers sound really good.

Totem and Naim have good synergy. Check them out.

Interesting, they are a new name to me. I just looked them up and it seems they are a Canadian company.

I also have not heard the speakers I mentioned, and only first heard of them yesterday! But they are marketed for such placement. As for soffit mounting, very common in recording studios for the reason I mentioned, but how well any given speaker would work in between books as I described Could only be found by trial, and would depend a lot on the speakers and actual setup.

It may be that what is good in a studio might not be at home - deoending on studio, home, and personal preference - but preventing comb filtering has to be beneficial.

In recording studios I agree they do Soffit mount but that usually means imbedded into the wall not surrounded by books or LPs. They will be properly anchored into the wall too.

What is good in a studio is not necessarily good in a listening room.

As I said, shelf needs to be solid, and how it would sound you’d only find out by trying - but what it is doing in eliminating comb filtering is no different. It might (or might not) prove better than sitting on a bare shelf, hanging on a wall, or sticking on a stand, depending on whether pros beat cons - but the key point is that If someone has suitable shelves and contents, trying costs nothing.

Hello, did you mean the “Booki Compact Bookshelf Speakers” they seem to be the Alchris Audio model specifically designed for bookshelf or sideboard use, according to their website. They do look interesting, having a bass radiator mounted on the rear rather than using a port (I also don’t think they’re a TL design).

For the OP, Neat Ministras are designed for closer to wall use, again I’m only going off their website, though not necessarily bookshelf use for which their Iota model is usually recommended.

Lastly Troels Gravesen has a purpose designed bookshelf model on his website, the Discovery Bookshelf, if one’s DIY skills are needing a workout

Unity Audio The Rock Mk II active. They are amazing

In the family room we have a media unit with speakers on shelves: Neat Ministra need stands and have great bass but too much in our set up, Vintage Linn Kan 2 were better, but the most Naim like sound was a pair of vintage Royd Coniston 2. All powered by Superuniti.
