Yes will do that and the USB sticks sound so much better than my HDX into the NDS.
Were you using USB with the HDX? Network streaming requires some optimization to get the full benefit.
I use the internal HDD in the HDX
I would just add that using a NAS (I have a couple of Netgear set up as X-Raid) is also good as a backup - USB or computer hard drives can crash and you lose everything. I generally have 3 backups - two in the house and one in the cloud. FWIW.
