I believe that to be true both for orchestral pieces and opera. The positioning and impact of various sections bursting forth can not be captured by any home environment imo. There is just something very special about the orchestra striking up.

I have always been puzzled by some records of live performance which can be more enjoyable to listen to than studio versions. The Eagles “New Kid In Town” on “Eagles Live” is just one example. I could probably name hundreds from my own vinyl and a good few CDs too.

Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York 1994 is still fabulous. The band rehearsed for two days, but there was a lot of tension. Apparently it was filmed in one take.
