Nova - Heat control

Just a couple songs in, but I’m cranking Miles, and definitely not as hot. I’ve stopped the fan to make sure. And…is there a sound improvement? There may be. Yeah. My ears were bleeding at 80…lol…so I had to submit and drop to 70…lol…

Sounds like an improvement re the heat. Richard keeps saying that the NACA need a long time to break in, 100 hrs or more, so maybe the sound is going to get even better. Enjoy

It’s NACA5……

Sorry for being lazy

Update…second album, 75…getting pretty warm. I put the fan back on…lol. It is better, but it still gets hot. I’m ordering the Powerline and hope that it improves another notch.

Clare is very happy with the Powerline on the Nova, as you know.

Re the heat, as long as it does not shut down, I assume that its sensor figures it is ok. If this improved, maybe it’s all you need.

I just ordered it. I have the credit at my dealer here for the AQ cables to put towards it. I bought the NACA5s from Crutchfield.

lol

Are you actually in the same room when listening at 80? Or maybe you visited to many hardcore concerts and are half deaf?

Joking aside: why do you need to cranck it up that high?

No need. It’s fun! No…I’m not planted in front of the speakers for long periods at 80. Short bursts. But I am a guitar player. So there’s that. I’m not hard of hearing. But why are you mumbling? Speak up! Lol…right now…48. Red hot Chilis…

Hm. Christ. Well. I generally listen album to album. Not playlists. Sorry if I was insensitive. I just didn’t see that. I thought of it like a turntable kind of. Not playing is stopped! So…do I need read that carefully again or can you give me the cliff notes? Ahh…OK. But…the negative in the display being on is…?
OK…in short…leave the Nova on all the time?

The negative with the display being on in my situation is that I see the display from the couch where I also watch TV and read, and from the kitchen table as well. So when I play an album in the morning but don’t finish it (tapping Play/Pause instead), the display stays enabled all day long showing the album, and often still when watching TV in the evening.

The only way to make the display auto-turn off after 10 or 20 minutes is standby. But standby means that it’s not optimally warmed up immediately; but I would like it to be.

So the solution for this is to enable both standby and server mode.

Apart from this display complication, it is simple:

If you want it always at best performance immediately and don’t mind the higher electricity bill, leave it on.

If you can live with 30 minutes or so warm-up time, configure it to auto-standby.

Got it. Thank you. Between my 64 year old tired eyes and ADHD studying is a drag. So. Question. Is there any negative in leaving it on all the time? As in…wear? So…as I don’t usually play from lists, when albums end my screen says load queue or whatever. But regardless, and note-I read somewhere else to always leave server enabled-if I want to be warmed up always but sleep the unit enable the server. I’ll do that now and see if the heat reacts.

The general recommendation for Naim units is to leave always on if you want immediate top performance. The Unitis may be less sensitive than classic kit, but I guess it still applies.

Yes, leaving server mode and standby both enabled ensures that it stays warmed up despite using standby. Hence being a solution for my scenario. But if you don’t care about the display (or always have it off, anyway) then you can just leave the unit turned on instead.

While you are clearing the mysteries of the universe…what does the settings option “rebuild music database” do? Does it reorder everything in alphabetical order? As opposed to latest additions first?

No, that’s just needed if there are issues with, say, album art display. It re-reads the metadata and, well, rebuilds its database.

You seem to have not found the sort feature  Naim did not make it too easy to find. It may differ on iOS, but on Android it is like this:

  1. Go to the Albums, Tracks, or Artists tab
  2. The albums/tracks/artists that you see are just a preview. Swipe all the way down
  3. At the bottom there should now be a horizontal bar labeled “More”. Tap it.
  4. You are now in the main album/tracks/artist view. There should now be an “A-Z” menu button top right. Tap it to see sort options.

:flushed:Lol…Sheesh. No…I had not. And I’ve been so frustrated…there was seemingly no order….ah…date added…oy…there’s not a genre tab anywhere is there?

I had the same misunderstanding. It is not obvious at all that what you initially see is just a preview (and I am still not sure what the criteria for inclusion in the preview are, or its order), and that you have to scroll down do find a hidden More button to see everything.

There are no genres in the Naim app that I know of, at least not when using Qobuz. (I guess when using a local UPnP server there is the option, if the files are tagged correctly).
That’s another reason I long ago switched to Roon

My idea was as all my sources are streaming (or downloaded from streaming) Roon isn’t worthwhile to me…?

Whether it’s worthwhile to you depends on your habits. Can only say that for me it’s more than worth it even if i had no local music. Like last time we discussed it

Among my favorite 8 reasons for Roon, only one has something to do with local music:
