Need help troubleshooting my new NSC 222. I recently purchased a Naim NSC 222 and only the right channel speaker has sound. I connected the 222 to my Naim NAP 250 via XLR cable/connectors as recommended by the dealer and Naim. I have triple checked the wiring. I also connected the 222 to an external amp via RCA cables and it works fine. As a sanity check I connected the old setup with the supercap and it works great.
So what am I missing?
Any suggestions?
First thing is to swap the connectors to check whether it is a cable or a channel that is down. Left becomes right, and right becomes left for the test.
Have you got a special cable that has two mono XLRs at the 222 end and a stereo XLR at the 250 end. Naim makes a cable for exactly this. Iâm assuming here that your 250 isnât the latest New Classic version.
Yes, I have that cable. I tried two, a cheaper Chinese one and a higher end Neutrik one. I checked continuity on both cables with an ohm meter.
Yes it is an older 250.
Bruss,
I did do that. I can safely say that it is not a channel out but then again I tried 2 different cables that I checked continuity with an ohm meter.
Iâd suggest you check how they are wired. They need to be connected to the correct pins at each and. The 250 XLR isnât balanced so is different to what you might expect.
I had a similar problem with my 222 when I got it. My dealer and Naim swapped it the next day. The problem I believe was that with one channel was that a relay wasnât working. Your dealer needs to contact Naim or the distributor and organise a replacement unit or a repair if a secondhand 222.
Naim supply a âspecialâ cable for that connection. As HH suggests, it may be wired differently to a more common similar cable. You would have to ask your Naim dealer about that.
I think that Hungry and Bruss may have found something. The cables I tried are balanced. If the 250 is not balanced I may need to get a Naim cable. Only at a Cost of $400 USD for a simple cable.
Think of it as an excuse to get a New Classic 250. You could offset the $400! And yes, it comes with the necessary cables in the box.
Youâll know where you $$ went if you get the 250NC. Itâs a great amp.
Your dealer should be able to modify one of your cables for you to see if it is just due to the cable wiring being incorrect.
I would also second HHâs view that upgrading to the NC 250 is worthwhile, I was amazed at how much better it was than my 250DR.
Not always for the cables in the box. My NVC TT did not have the 8 pin DIN cable in the box, so my phono stage could not be powered from my 322. Luckily my dealer had one in the shop. A QC issue? The box came to my dealer from Naim USA.
That has no relevance to the fact that the twin XLRs come with the NC250.
My comments related to âin the boxâ. When I raised the possibility of purchasing the NVC TY, on the forum and also with my dealer, I was told that an 8 pin din wouid be included.
It should be in the box. Mistakes happen. The next person to check whatâs in the box is the dealer, who resolved it by supplying the missing cable.
I am glad it got resolved.
Troubleshooting a NSC222 cable issue, easy convert to a poweramp upgrade suggestion ![]()
It was, of course, tongue in cheek. One would hope that everyone would realise that.
Stranger things have been proposed here. It really depends on the OP. If the OP was intending to upgrade the amp in the short term, then getting an âexpensive â Naim cable, would make no sense to me.
