I recently got the NVC-tt along with the 332/300. I run two turntables with MC carts (one stereo and one mono) and having worked out the gain/capacitance/resistance settings for each it sounds superb.
however it is a pain to unplug one turntable and plug the other one in when i want to switch.
So…i am considering a step up transformer so i can run the lesser table into that and then into the MM input. That way i just flick the mm/mc switch and i am off and running. No more unplugging into the mc input.
However the manual is confusing. It says 2 things that do not agree. Paraphrasing…
“The adjustment switches do not apply for moving magnet cartridges…”
“When using a MM cartridge set the resistance to 1k and the capacitance to 100pf…”
So, if these settings do not matter for MM then why do i have to change them? What i was hoping is if i get the transformer i only have to flick the mc/mm switch and not also change the settings.
Anybody know if i really need to change these settings when using MM cart?
I did a quick test today. Attached my old AT95E cart to the Systemdek and plugged it into the MM input on the NVC-tt.
Changing the Gain, Resistance, Capacitance settings on the NVC seems to have no affect at all on the sound. So I think once you select MM these adjustments are no longer applied.
Caveat - the 95E is a very introductory cart that is not a detail freak to say the least - and it could be that with one of the newer AT ones with better magnets, nude stylus, micro line shape and boron cantilever you might hear a small difference. It is I guess possible but I don’t think so.
The adjustments apply to MC cartridge input only. The settings for the MM input are fixed. That’s either an error in the manual or you misread something.
I thought they were fixed just going by the manual. What’s not spelled out is whether jou can plug both a MC and MM in at the same time and have either work to full performance, there’s no MM/MC switch that I can see, just MC gain.
There is a switch to select the MM or MC input. The weird thing is that the manual claims if you use the MM side you need to change the settings anyway while at the same time saying the settings don’t matter for MM (see my first post for paraphrasing from the manual). the manual appears to be wrong. I tested and the settings do nothing when set to the MM side.
To conclude my experience, i purchased a SUT from Ned Clayton on ebay. It uses Cinemag transformers and is configurable to 4 ratios: 1/10, 1/13, 1/20, 1/40, and 3 different grounding options. I plugged the Systemdek into it and used standard el cheapo 3 foot RCAs to plug it into the NVC-tt. I positioned it below the Systemdek and to the left of the olive 250 and Npx300. I grounded it to both Left and right channel at the Sut itself.
Absolutely zero hum even when turned to maximum. Sound is excellent. And now with the flick of the MM/MC switch on the Nvc-tt i can move back and forth between the stereo and mono tables with ease.
I experimented with the different ratio options and settled on 1:13 as best. When i asked chatgpt what ratio would be best with the internal resistance and output voltage of the AT33Mono it did the math and suggested 1:14 or 1:15…so my choice of 1:13 seems best!
I am thrilled with how well this has worked out and how easy it was. Photos attached.
