Just had a carpet laid in my study - very nice, warmer and good for yoga etc but I overlooked the fact that the office chair doesn’t slide well on carpet with underlay. Has anyone tried mats that go under the chair to allow it to move better? Any ideas on whether they work and if so makes to look at would be appreciated.
Ikea do them, the only downside to the Ikea ones are they slide about a bit.
The previous one I had from Staples had bits that dug into the carpet to stop them sliding around.
I have the one from Ikea, on a ceramic tile floor.
Works well, but does slide a bit.
Wish I’d got one for the study as my chair has now ripped the surface off some flooring laminate in places. Horrible stuff I need to replace at some stage so I’m not too bothered!
There were loads of types on Amazon when I had a look last.
I have this one from Amazon:
Marvelux 90 x 120cm (36" x 47") Heavy Duty Premium Polycarbonate Rectangular Office Chair Mat for Low, Standard and Medium Pile Carpets, Transparent Carpet Protector
it has little spikes on the underside to stick into the carpet so it never moves. works very well.
You definitely need a polycarbonate type. Others quickly dent and distort. I suggest!
We have one, otherwise heavy office chairs leave dents in the carpet.
It’s quite large and thick, but I’ve no idea where it came from as SWMBO sourced it. Underside is non slip rubber, topside is some sort of heavy duty woven fabric. Very sturdy.
Looks a bit more “furniture” than a polycarbonate mat. And does not move no matter how often chairs slide about.
My office chair came with two sets of castors. One for flooring, the other for thick carpet.
If your castors are removable, it might be simpler to get a set designed for carpet.
Some have mentioned that the mats move or slide. Those of us that have sailed on ocean going ships have experienced everything from ashtrays to cutting boards sliding on the ships mess tables. The solution was to put a toe bead of RTV Silicon on oen side aroun the corners and let if cure and then flip it over and no mofre sliding. the same worked on towel bars in the shower areas your mat will be portable but only when you wqant to move it to vacuum.
Ok on hard floors, but won’t work on carpets.
Unless you have a corduroy type carpet, the problem is the pile, which has a particular direction it will go when pressed. The result is that things on it “walk” in that direction when pressed and released, as happens when getting on and off a chair, rocking, etc., and with carpet protecrors intended to reduce damage to carpet from office-type chairs, the movement is exacerbated by the relatively low weight per unit area resulting from the weight being spread out by a semi-rigid sheet of plastic. A mat with “teeth” on the underside may help, though length and density of teeth to suit the carpet may need to be found by trial and error. Better I expect, but whether available is another matter, would be a mat with some sort of tacky back, sufficiently stick to stick to the carpet fibres in use, but removable when wanted. I will be interested to learn if anyone finds such, as one of my sons is seeking exactly the same solution!
IKEA Stopp Filt will stop anything moving. Felt sprayed with latex. The stuff is crazy. It sticks to anything like double sided tape. It will hold a carpet down on smooth polished floor or hold a smooth mat down on a carpet.
Thanks for all the replies, some interesting ideas. I’ll probably try a polycarbonate one first and see how things go.
