Old Kindle models to be retired

I got a Kindle Paperwhite 1st generation - will no longer be supported after or on May 20th.

Still works but tbh never used it as much as anticipated. I seem to recall being able to transfer downloaded Kindle titles via USB but seems being able to download the was stopped last year. Shame really.

There are some simple and well publicised workarounds I was reading about a few months ago.

Thanks, I need to look into it further.

When I last checked new 3rd party batteries can be installed in many models not that mine didn’t hold a charge.

It just seems such a shame to ditch perfectly functioning tech even if it’s rather old.

I think I need to get Mrs AC a Kindle, but both she and my daughter who are avid book readers prefer conventional print.

So many titles they read however are cheap as chips through Kindle or similar or even free.

I still have the 1st gen Kindle DX and 2nd gen Kindle. These had actual buttons on them.

I use these extensively even though they are outdated. They manage to hold a charge for about a day. Even after market batteries are no good now. You can find them but they have been in warehouses for years and often DOA or greatly degraded.

The space saved was fantastic. Though Mrs. FZ gradually decided the best way to save space and enjoy books was to use the public library.

Amazon have a habit of remotely bricking things but it is inconsistent. They remotely disabled my 1st Gen fire tablet after 7 years. I swore a lot. But they still support my 12 year old 1st Gen Fire 4K box.

I have 2 Kindle Paperwhite at home.
since the beginning these are in airplane mode.
Never sync with Amazon.
Only use Calibre to install/delete book on the 2 Kindle.

I’ve got an old Fire tablet whuch barely got used - from that I might have to assuem Amazon have bricked it.

Why would they do that? I can accept devices won’t be updated indefinitely but to kill all functionality seems a bit much.

Thanks, will take a look.

Our old K required a new battery.

Plenty of videos on line on how to replace. Think I got the battery off eBay.

Easy to do and cheap….haven’t used the thing since!!!

Our B&O A2 required a new battery and that was similarly easy to do….have used that loads since replacement.

Well first came the apps that stopped running because the Fire OS was no longer updated. Eventually even the Prime app only displayed a “please upgrade your Fire”.

So not bricked from the perspective that it actually powered on. But totally bricked from the perspective zero apps ran including Prime.

Way of the world sadly.

I use an ancient Kobo Aura HD that I’ve had for years. I use it daily (terrible bookworm), and while it’s getting a bit glitchy (eg it sometimes turns 2 pages when you only touched for 1) I have to say that it has been a good friend.

I’ve been trying to resurrect that Fire 7" tablet which it seems was released in 2015 and purchased in late 2016.

Thought it was dead as it would not charge or show any signs of life using the USB A to micro USB lead I was using to charge the Kindle.

A bit of searching and did a hard restart - no joy.

Swapped to a different power adapter and a shorter WD cable. Amazingly it then started, spent 10 minutes optimising storage and then asked me to register. Maybe I’ve never used it at all as it was around the time of a move.

Once I got into it it’s quite nice to use having come from the Apple ecosystem, the screen has some light bleed but it’s a nice display overall. Now charging.

Annoyingly some rumours suggest it may also be hit by the 20th May thing, though it doesn’t say so in the email I had.

Ho hum.

I have a number of 1st gen Echo, Echo Show and Dot devices - could have sworn they used to appear in my Amazon device list (not checked for ages) but can’t seem to find them now. Odd.

BBC article on this.
