Old NDX - Which cable to update

I have a fairly old NDX and have updated the software in the past.

I probably have the cable but no idea where it is.

The NDX needs (I think) an RS232 (?) input and I need to connect it to my Laptop (ideally) since I don’t want to have to get at the back of the desktop.

So I think I neeed RS232 to USB. Laptop is Windows 7.

Thanks for any help.

The linked files here should tell you everything you need. This is for PC:

That’s a very old NDX, does it have the 24/192 streaming board.
It’s a discontinued item and no longer available as a service part.

Thank you. I will look at that information.

I’m not sure if it can support 24/192 (I have never tried). It just has one aerial on the back and does not have BlueTooth. I can’t remember when I bought it but was probably over 10 years ago.

See Richards first Link, above:

“Please note, you must have a 24/192 compatible unit in order to use the new internet radio service. This can be checked from within the app by navigating to Settings → About. If the number highlighted below is a 1 or a 2, your unit is not compatible.”

Thats what I’m asking … does it have the 24/192 streaming board. This is an internal PCB with the required hardware to process 24/192 and enable associated and other functions.

A NDX with the 232 socket is a very early version, very likely it’s not 24/192, unless the PCB has been changed.
If you check the apps Settings → About as posted above to find out, if it’s not 24/192, you are kinda stuck with what you have, and it’s pointless to update the firmware

I need to collect the NDX since it has been away with Naim getting the screen replaced. Once I have it back I will try to update the software.

Another idea; does Naim update the software when changing the screen?

Yes I understand that Naim do install the latest firmware when replacing a screen as the replacement display requires newer firmware to operate correctly.

That’s great. In that case I won’t need to find a cable.

I have nDac and NDX. This was not a plan. I bought the nDac to go with my Squeezebox and then got the NDX and kept the nDac.

I understand that the specs of the two boxes say.(I could look it up)

One goes to 24/96 and the other 24/192; one does DSD and the other 2xDSD. Can’t remember which.

I have ripped CD’s, ripped DVD-audio, and a few ripped SACD’s (Sony PlayStation). None exceed 24/96 or DSD.

Hopefully get the NDX back next week with a working screen and, is software upgraded, won’t need to look for a cable.

Good news … NDX is back with new screen. AND it has the latest software.

Bad news … I can’t enter my WiFi password. (I can enter it but the NDX won’t connect) so I assume it’s too long (34 characters). I have sent an email to Naim. It used to work and still works with my ND5XS. (It’s actually a pass-phrase and I don’t want to change it because we have lots of tablets, PC’s etc using it. I tried 5 times to enter it and I have it written down).

If I have to, can I reinstall an older version of firmware?

It’s possible to install old firmware in an NDX if you have them but if you are hoping that it might solve your login problem I doubt it will, and you will lose some functionality too. The first thing I would try is a factory reset.

You probably need clear an old Wi-Fi password.
There are 3 ways to do this.

1: Clear and replace via the front panel screen.
Press the Home button on your Naim remote control.
Navigate to and select Settings.
Select Network Settings>Wireless Setup.
Selecting Wireless Setup instantly clears the current saved Wi-Fi network and password from the unit.
You can then search for your network

2: Overwrite using Naim App
Go to the main Rooms screen and tap the “+”(Add New Device) icon at the top left.
Follow the prompts to pair your streamer to your network

3: Full Factory Reset

But best of all, especially as NDX does not have a robust modern stnd wifi connectivity, connect via ethernet, no password required.

I have the NDX back from Naim and they have done a factory reset (I assume) since they upgraded the software.

I know that ethernet would be better than wifi but not practical for me without lifting floorboards, drilling walls etc.

I think the problem is that it doesn’t support long passwords. (The old version of the software did… it works on my ND5X2).

It’s really annoying. I will see what comes back from Naim.

Apologies.

Contaced Naim and the problem was I hadn’t screwed in the wifi aerial correctly. Everything now works.

Maybe Richard might like to delete this email and the previous. Up to him. I have no preference.

Now I have to try out the new iRadio option.
