Richaaard! Mind the cyclist dear.
Be careful with my Royal Doulton.
And a variety of other stuff!
Just seen on the Beeb news page, the sad news, what a great legacy she has left behind for us to enjoy.
Dame Patricia Routledge R.I.P.
Never did anything for me personally, but RIP madam
Martin
I once had the pleasure of meeting a real life Mrs Bucket and her very first words to me were
“I am not called Hyacinth”
I remember a number of Ladies of my parent’s generation who were very like Mrs Bucket.
They don’t make em like that anymore!!
Had a good signing voice too – from the days when many actors/actresses were multi-talented.
Her character Kitty, from Cheadle, was written for her by Victoria Wood.
“I’ve just met a radical feminist who asked me: What did I think of Marx?”
I said, “Their cardigans aren’t what they were, but you can’t knock their Brussel sprouts.”
An icon of British TV. Thank you for the laughter.
RIP 1🙏
Also, remember ‘Hetty Wainthropp Investigates’, Friday nights on BBC1 in the 1990’s. Yes, Patricia Routledge sadly missed.
She features in several Talking Heads written for her by Alan Bennett.
Rip to her. First and foremost, she was an excellent actress, in a way a shame, best known for Hyacinth Bucket, although few others could have played such a part and make people like the character.
As mentioned above, her appearances in Alan Bennet monologues were a masterclass of comic timing and a beautifully paced piece that made you believe she was just chatting to someone.
Never a beauty but a good character actress.
I think I may have posted this clip once before. It’s a trio with Kevin Kline and Rex Smith from the marvelous 1980 NYC Central Park production of The Pirates of Penzance (although the song is actually borrowed from Ruddigore).
Also in the production was Linda Ronstadt.
Hyacinth Bucket is one of the greatest comic creations on TV. Patricia made the character he own. Maybe the last sitcom that made me laugh.
I think Dame Patricia would have been amused by the newspaper report of her passing, announcing that ‘Dame Patricia Routledge has kicked the bouquet’.
