Please don't laugh

Hi All,
I need newbie advice here - So I have a unit star - I want to add a power amp but am totally new to this (sorry if I’ve generated groans - from the Audiophiles). If I have understood this I take the pre-out RCA from the uniti and plug these into the RCA inputs on the amp and plug the speakers into the amp. But there’s only one channel/connection here one white and one red) or are the two RCA (ie 2 white and 2 red) side by side the 2 channels and I ignore the white writing showing 'analogue inputs with a 5 pin din and 2 RCA. I’ve seen mention of a Y cable is that what I’m missing?

Thanks

Welcome!

All you need to do is connect from the Pre-amp output pair of RCA phonos to a separate power amp via a suitable interconnect. Plug the speakers into the power amp.

What power amp will you be using?

Red is always the Right Channel. The other colour is always the Left One…

R/R is how I always remember too

Must admit I never knew which was which until now!

Just to add to what Richard said, the analog inputs (DIN and 2xRCA) on the back of the Star are inputs and you can ignore those completely.

The two RCAs (one white and one red, one above the other) in the white box that says Preamp Output are all you need. Each RCA gives you the signal in the middle and the earth on the outside of the plug. So two RCAs is four connections.

So the old adage, “Is there any red port left”, does not apply in hifi.

Or to misquote Brian Blessed (Blackadder series 1), “ I have two RCA sockets. The red one……and the other one.”

Always… more to learn… :expressionless:

Hi All, thank you - the bit that is confusing me is stereo - so 2 channels (left and right) so if the preout is only one channel how does that work? (am I totally dumb?). I do work for a guy who is really into his audio and instead of paying me for a job he gave me some very nice gear - KEF LS50 (meta?) and the uniti star - he also gave me an audiolab? power amp xp 8300? I think…I fix vintage cars, some very nice ones - I think I got a good deal, he owed me £3.5k…audio doesnt smell like petrol?

Yes, the pre-out is two channels; the white RCA phono is the left and the red RCA phono is the right channel.

Bought new. That lot looks to be about £4500, so a fair trade to the “loan”.

But power amp might not be much better than the amp inside the Star. So an option could be to sell the 8300 , and just use the Star and speakers. That way you still get an awesome hi-fi, but also a few hundred quid to spend on fun !

Don’t assume the Star will be better with the Audiolab attached. Try it by itself too.

There are 2 channels from the RCA pre-out sockets. You may be getting confused by the 4 outlets for the speakers which carry the two-channel output but there are just 2 outlets for the Pre-amp outs.

The reason for this is the RCA socket carries both the signal and the “earth” for the channel one set for the left (white RCA) and one for the right channel (Red RCA) . The RCA plug on the lead has a centre pin that is electrically separate from the outer metal ring which is the “earth”

I hope that helps. Welcome to the forum BTW.
