PMC Prodigy 5

I will be handing back my loan pair of ATC SCM11’s in the next couple of days and while I think they are very good I think I should at least try another speaker before deciding

I’m interested in the PMC Prodigy 5. With suitable stands the SCM’s would work out roughly the same price as the PMC

Has anyone heard the PMC and compared them to the ATC? I’m guessing their sound presentation are probably completely different

yes. i tried pmc prodigy 1 then 5 on home demo against scm11. The is a fast, lively speaker but just a tad bass light, whilst the 5 overwhelmed my room with bass, but my drylined modern room has always accentuated bass nodes. - kinda needed a prodigy 3! so stayed with scm11 until recently

What did you replace the 11’s with?

audiovenctor QR1se - fancied trying an AMT tweeter.

I’m know the Prodigy is the entry level for PMC now but wondered if it would be equivalent, sound wise, to the Twenty from the old range

It would be good if they were, as they are about half the price. But sadly not.

I get the impression the Prophecy range may be loosely equivalent to the former Twenty25 passive range, or at least is what has replaced it, while the Prodigy is a new lower “entry level” range with a choice of just one standmount and one floorstander, perhaps to give people a taster for what might be…

I’ve just picked up a pair to demo at home

Be interested in your findings…

As soon as I played my first track I thought “silky smooth” and the more I played the more I thought that

Bass is definitely lower than the ATC and I expected that and, of course, not as tight as the ATC

More listening tomorrow

Now I’m wishing I still had the ATC’s at home for direct comparison to the PMC’s

The PMC’s are so different

The PMC’s are certainly a more laid back sound than the ATC’s but can’t decide yet which I prefer

I would describe the PMC’s as a bit cuddly…but not sure that’ll make any sense to anyone

Take your time. You really need to listen to potential speakers for a good few days to avoid the risk of making a big mistake. I’ve done it a couple of times.

Maybe these newer PMCs are different but I’d not describe my passive Twenty5 24i as cuddly.

So far the PMC’s are, to me, sounding rather unexciting

I don’t find them very resolving either which is the complete opposite of the ATC’s

Maybe I’m missing the ATC sound already

Been listening most of the day

The What Hifi review is really positive about them, and even describes them as a fun listen. Maybe they just don’t suit your room. Maybe they are not run in - did you ask about that? If very new they will be a bit constrained. On paper they are a good match for the Nait.

I have SCM11 and PMC prodigy 5

They are on the end of different systems and in different rooms.

What you have described is spot on. They are notably different presentations

The middle ground and arguably the best alternative between the analytics of the ATC and the punchy PMC would be an ALCHRIS TX5

That would give the best of both worlds. Again, room dependent!

They were a brand new pair so may need a bit of running in

How interesting TLR that you have both speakers

Can I ask which one you prefer?

There is absolutely no chance of auditioning the ALCHRIS TX5 so I’ll rule that out

I’m not sure I prefer either over each other. They’re in different rooms with different sources….

The P5s are a relegation from a previous set up so most likely the next to be sold on.

I love my ATC in my study. But I am Intending to relocate speakers soon

Is it the Prodigy or Prophecy that you’re home demo’ing? I heard the prophecy 7 recently and was pretty impressed with them - very complete sounding and pretty much disappeared in the room. Interested what others think of them as have been pretty tempted to look at the 5a or 7s.
